Great. This is turning into another "Beat the person above you" thread.

There is no room for patriotism in economy and btw Lutz was born in Zurich, Switzerland.
I disagree, there's still some patriotism left in the ever-expanding global market. Car companies are becoming even more alike from globalization, and there's little to distinguish them. The Pontiac GTO/Holden/Vauxhall Monaro/Chevy Lumina SS comes to mind, as well as the entire division of Lexus. Look at VW's "Engineered in Germany" campaign, and Mitsubishi's crazy samurai ninja chicks beating on drums with brushstrokes campaign.

Patriotism is even more important in American companies. Look at the Chrysler 300C: it's hard to mistake that for anything from Europe or Asia. It's distinctively American. If we Yanks can't build good cars, at least we'll build bold cars that people might take pride in. I like the article from The Truth About Cars that talks about that.

And BTW:

Why can't the Chinese build cars as good as they could build walls?! :p

as for britain building good cars? where are most of the major motorsport companies based? :p

sorry, just had to be said.

You mean ineffective (didn't stop the Mongols in ~1200 and the Manchus in 1644), obsolete (completed by the Ming in the 1600s way after the invention of cannon), and revolution-causing (the first wall put so much stress on the Qin dynasty's infrastructure that it toppled immediately after the emperor died)?

I'm of Chinese origin, so I get to say these things. :p

And while we're on the subject of WWII fightercraft:

P-51D and upwards used a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. Nowadays, Ford and Chevy V-6s and V-8s are showing up in British sports cars (Noble, Marcos, Ultima, among others). Ironic?

the brits have never been able to make any good engines them self (not counting Race engines)

Never? Surely that's an over-statement?

I own a cheap General Motors car. With 27,000 miles on it so far you know how many problems I've had with it?

ONE. The cable for HVAC blend door bent. That was it! Every GM I have owned have performed beautifully! I am glad to see Lutz fess up, but GM quality is from my OWN experience of owning 5 Pontiacs, on par with Toyota.

Mmm. The TVR Straight-six, for one.

The Rover K-series once inside an Elise or a Caterham, for another.

Oh just go home "american infidels"....
Lets just stay away from the range of the planes and stick with the design

okay, going off topic again:

The Spitfire is a lovely design and elliptical wings are very effecient and eliminate lift killing wing-tip vorticies. However, elliptical wings are very hard to build.

Mustang is another lovely aircraft (yes, it uses a british engine), and it has many interesting stories behind it. Sure it didn't fight in the battle of britian, but it was the first long-range fighter-escort, and the aircraft flown by the Tuskeegee Airmen (only squadron to never lose a bomber they escorted).

You know what, to stop spamming this thread, we'll take the discussion to OT: http://forum.finalgear.com/viewtopic.php?p=246145#246145
