Hi guys - I keep meaning to do a build up webpage sometime, but never get around to it.
The actual cost was quite a bit higher, but we were fairly tarty with a few bits. I think to do it "properly" you'd need to budget at least 3k or so, but they vary hugely, we know of a few people who have done it a lot less, and some spend a lot more.
Basically, if you can fabricate a lot of your own stuff you can cut costs - Steve (who was my fellow builder) worked at a firm where he could get materials for next to nothing and could get some stuff made up, so that helped - i.e. we got the metal for the bonnet for free, got the suspension brackets made up for free...
If you have an Escort, you would need:
Engine
Gearbox
Driveshaft
Rear Axle/Diff
Steering rack
and any other useful bits.
Using/modifying all of the above are enough to count for you to get an age related reg plate.
You also need the front hubs from a cortina (much $$$ nowadays!) and also, I'd keep the brake bits from the escort (non-servo preferably).
A lot of people now go a bit more modern and use Sierra bits; i.e. Pinto engine, and the rear diff bits. Companies such as MK also make mountings to use the sierra hubs. Then you can just go completely custom of course! We originally had the 1.6 xflow out of the escort with the 4 speed box, now we have the toyota engine, plus a custom bellhousing from Raw, along with a 5 speed ford box from a capri (I think). You can mix n match bits till the cows come home really...
www.locostbuilders.co.uk is a good forum to look at.
