As I'm sure some of you have been to New York or even live there, could you guys give me some ideas on what to visit and do.
I've been there before and know it won't get boring, but we want to see more than just the usual tourist stuff...

We're basically open for everything, not just Manhattan Island, also stuff outisde NYC.

We will be there from Dec. 6th to Dec. 12th.

Thanks,
Beni

go in the new years man!!

The obvious touristy things
Times square, statue of liberty, ground zero, empire state building, etc...

Yeah, but what else? Stuff that won't be in our New York guides is what I'm looking for...

go visit the twin towers! or another tall building?

Still too soon?

Chinese food in Chinatown.

Italian food in Little Italy (Which is right next to Chinatown).

Broadway shows/plays.

The Muesum of Natural History.

Central Park/Fifth Ave/Rockafella Center.

Governor's island (Not much to do there, but you can take the free ferry across... and takes pics of Manhattan.)

Clubs (I don't know much about them, since I don't go...)

It depends on what you want to do... eat, sightseeing, activities, clubbing...

Bronx zoo is a great Idea.
See a show on broadway... either spamalot (if you like monty python) or Avenue Q (the internet is for porn comes from this musical).

You could seriously just walk around all day and be entertained the whole time...

There is a steak/BBQ right off time square, I forget the name of it but I'm sure somehere knows. It is absolutly unbelievable and it's open late (12am-2amish.)

Yeah thank you, Bronx Zoo looks great, the Ninja thing may be a bit expensive, not sure about broadway shows, but I'll tell this to my friends.

Little Italy and Chinatown are on our list! The Museum of Natural History too, I've been there and it was very interesting.

Any ideas on what to see in about 1 to 2 hours driving distance from Manhattan? Seaside towns or beautiful landscape?

You gotta look at the Christmas tree at Rockafella center...

The Poconos (google the area) is about 3 - 4 hours from NYC by car (traffic). You can go skiing there. I wouldn't recommend driving in NYC, since the people here are very aggressive. It is also hard to find parking before 7pm. Take the subway or a taxi, for the full NYC experience... Here is a subway map.

I suggest you take a look at www.zagat.com, they have good reviews on NYC restaurants. I also recommend Shanghai food in chinatown, and order the famous "Little dragon bun"... it is basically dumblings with soup inside.

Here are some Asian recommendations (not too expensive either):

Evergreen Shanghai (Chinatown) - "Little dragon bun w/ crab meat"; Shanghai noodles with beef; Bubble tea

Lemongrass Grill (Union square) - Their fried duck is great; Pad Thai; Thai iced tea

Any viet restaurant (Chinatown) - #1... Beef broth with noodles; Beef cubes with rice; Grilled Pork Chop with rice; Spring rolls; Summer rolls

Saigon Grill (Upper Manhattan) - Coconut curry soup with chicken; Satay Chicken with rice

There's always chain restaurants such as:
Olive Garden (Times Square) - Italian
Red Lobster (Times Square) - Seafood
Dave and Buster (Times Square) - American
McD's and Burger King (Everywhere) - Crap

Check out Gray's Papaya... They have 2 hot dogs and a papaya juice special for $2.75... mad cheap!

You can also take a walk on the Brooklyn Bridge... not too far from ground zero... just remember to dress warm.

py2e, thanks a lot, I'll write all your recomendations down!

Does it usually snow in New York this time of the year? What do you think how cold it will be?

Are there any restrictions when taking pictures in New York?

It'll be cold and windy. No restrictions... unless they tell you. Bring common sense... lots of it... because ppl will try to rip tourists off (like buying bootleg goods in Chinatown).

what are you looking to do on your trip? just visit places?
also, how long are u staying and when?

For the seaside, you can vist long island and the famous hamptons. It is a very nice rich beach area. Things are expensive there and traffic can be horrible on weekends, but it is the vacationing spot for many well-to-do in NYC. However, i dont think it is as fun as it would be in the summer since they have some of the best beaches in New York.

As others said, theres TONS to do here, it all depends on what u are interested in.

Then there's the tradition of being out late and getting some food at Leo Lindy's at like 3 in the morning.

I personally like the Rose Planetarium and The Guggenheim.

The MOMA is good too, as is central park.

If you're a golfer, there's Bethpage state park a few hours away by car.

Try to get tickets for Conan O'Brien, its worth it.

Soho is nice to walk around as well.

*Disclaimer: I hate New York
