free anti-virus

Avast is pretty good, and it's free, but I think it's pretty heavy tho (use a lot of resources).

avast, i use it and yep, its pretty light on CPU in the background check mode (checks web email and files you open) but its pretty intensive on full system scans.

on the upside, i only need to do 1 full system scan and the background checker will scan any new files i may encounter (via drives or internet). so whats the big deal? it's not like problems will create themselves on your comp, they only get there from other infected comps.

I've used it before, and for some odd reason it used up a lot of resources. But people have been saying that Avast is supposed to be light on resources. So I don't know, maybe there's something wrong with my computer. I've used AVG before as well; it's quite good but the GUI looks quite ugly, especially when there's a virus on your harddrive and this ugly-looking monster pops up to warn you. Kids can get nightmares when they see that thing at night!!! :lmao:

I don't see anything in that statement that says ther will be NO free version of 7.5. All that that statement tells me is that as of jan 15 2007, the 7.1 version of AVG Free will no longer get virus updates. This is their normal tactic with the free version, so i don't know what all the fuss is about.

Yeah, AVG Free is not going away :)

I've got Norton antivirus on my laptop and AVG on the PC and i have to say i prefer AVG

I have Norton with some dubious mod that extends its Auto Update till the end of the year, every year.

I've got Norton Corporate anti-virus on my PCs (it was a requirement to have it installed at school), but I have used Avast in the past. Avast is decent software (at the time it was the only AV that ran on Windows Vista). I haven't used AVG but I may consider it in the future.

I actually haven't used anti virus protection for years, and have been clean (just do an occasional online scan now and then). As long as I watch where I go and what I open, I never get viruses.

Never purchase (or download something that is SUPPOSED to be purchased) to use as an A/V. These programs, like McAfee and Norton, use way to many resources.

I personally recommend AVG Free. Some people in this thread are misunderstanding what Grisoft is saying about the free version. They simply mean that the FREE version of 7.1 will expire in January, and the FREE version of 7.5 starts now.

You speak truth ;)

Does anyone else think "Norton's System Works" Is an Oxymoron ?

Haha...re-invention of an old joke ("Microsoft Works"), but still good

...actually, it's no joke. Yes, do believe that is an oxymoron, in it's very definition.

if you people didn't go to porn sites all the time, you wouldn't need anti-virus programs.

AVG is the way to go.
