Aston Martin is considering building a new range-topping supercar to rival the Mercedes SLR, and, to a lesser extent, the Bugatti Veyron, according to U.K. magazine AutoExpress. The high-performance coupe is codenamed DBX, the report claims.

The DBX would offer a top speed in excess of 205 mph, and a zero to sixty time in the mid-three-second range. Power would likely come from a 700 horsepower 6.0-liter V12 engine.

The DBX would be a spiritual successor to the 1986 Aston Martin Zagato, which was created to reach 300km/h (186mph). The DBX will use a version of Aston's versatile vertical horizontal (VH) aluminum/composite platform, with technology from the new DBS sports car.

The car would likely be priced against the $450,000 Mercedes SLR.

I guess this might work if they're going for an SLR type of car. Not if they're going for a Koenigsegg type car though.

I think before that they should get to the Vanquish and come up with something new in place of that... or would this replace the Vanquish?

I want pictures!

I know there aren't any yet, but I still want them.

"The car would likely be priced against the $450,000 Mercedes SLR"

why would you price it against a car that isn't selling?

The SLR isn't selling well?

Why don't they just upgrade the Vanquish. Adding another model to the line up seems like a bad idea to me.

Yeah like make a Vanquish-SR or something like that. But I agree that they should offer the engine in The Vanquish (and maybe my favorite the Rapide) would be epic.

Is this even likely now? Was this planned under Ford or ProDrive?

I reckon it should be a Vanquish replacement, it's a bit silly to have the DB9, Vanquish, DBS and DBX (and the V8, but it's smaller) in that size range, especially for a small outfit like Aston. I do agree on the SLR competitor (rather than Koenigsegg), though, Astons should be quick GT cars, not hard-edged hypercars.

More of an image thing methinks. The SLR must make people want A160s, right? :p When people see the DBX, they might be more inclined to consider a AMV8 if they can afford it.. of course.

700 is a little crazy though... I mean the 599 has 611 and that seems like a lot. I wonder how they'll tame that much HP for a GT car? Like Veyron...?

Aston building a GT 'bahn-basher? If it looks as good as, sounds as good as, and performs as (equivalently) good as the DB9 (or, preferably, the DBR9) then I'll have to sock some money away to pay for a new keyboard.

i swear the vanquish is going out of production, hence the ultimate version as a last bang sort of thing, and I assumed this would be the replacement...lets hope they get the gearbox right this time:p...and hope they try something new with the design, astons are getting way to similar nowadays, especially with the rapide on its way

The DBS is set to replace the Vanquish

Aston Martin Announces Two New Models
March 22, 2007
by Justin Couture / American Auto Press

If you haven't already heard, Ford Motor Company has sold Aston Martin fromits PAG luxury division. The lucky buyers, a consortium comprised of David Richards of the British engineering and motorsport firm Prodrive, which currently runs Aston's DBR9 sports car team, plus two Kuwaiti investment firms and a Texan banker and Aston collector, purchased 90-percent of the profit-making British sports car maker for just under $1bn; Ford will retain the remaining 10 percent. Dr. Ulrich Bez, the current Aston CEO, also signed a contract to extend his role as CEO for another five years, ensuring project continuity into the future. Now that the ink is dry on the contract, the new owners are eager to let the world know exactly what its plans are.

The first announcement is to do with the Rapide four-door, which we figured was headed for production. The gorgeous sedan that debuted in concept form at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in January will be launched by 2009. Constructed from the versatile VH aluminum platform, and most likely powered by a V12 engine, its sights are set on the wealthyconnoisseur who values a car's driving dynamics as much as its styling. Think of it as a step up from the driver-oriented Maserati Quattroporte or Audi S8, but with greater exclusivity. The successor to the futuristic Lagonda, the Rapide represents a side of Aston Martin not seen since the '80s.

Aston wants to build between 1,000 and 2,000 of these four-door coupes per year, a much larger volume than the initial projection of 300 to 500 units. Combined with the production of the "baby" V8 Vantage and the DB9, Aston's total vehicle production would jump to 7,000 units, a figure that's not at all shabby for a carmaker that was onthe verge of bankruptcy just over decade and a half ago. In order to fulfill the production demands, Aston would hire an additional 200 workers for its Gaydon assembly facility, expanding the total production crew to 2,000.

But before the four-door Aston lands, the range will get a booster shot with a new model. The new car will be called the DBS, but it won't be a glorified DB9, the vehicle sharing the same name that starred in the James Bond flick, Casino Royale. Bez remarked, "... it won't be a direct replacement for the Vanquish either, because we prefer to carve out a new identity for the car, however it will be our flagship product, and will use our VH platform."

With the current Vanquish being phased out after a successful run, the DBS is expected to arrive by the end of this year
, with a possible debut at Frankfurt. Bez also spoke of a vehicle called the DBX, which might serve as the replacement to the DB9, and potentially feature all-wheel drive, a first for the company.

So then the Rapide is replacing the Vanquish, since it's more a flagship and the DB9 made it usless?

Although 700hp and RWD is almost un-useable, it's still pretty cool. I bet they're just going to twin turbo the current V12 and call it a day. But Aston Martin are about design anyways, hopefully the DBX will look good.

i hope it doesnt just look like another DB9. (not saying its bad) but they honestly all look the same.
