Does Jeremy Really Hate Us, Or Does He Secretly Love Us?

Clarkson despises everyone and everything that's not British. It seems that it really bugs him, that everyone makes better cars now a days than the British, yet he is desperately trying to convince himself and everyone else that Britain and everything British is the best.

Some very good observations here. I especially like the one about him being a closet American, fat, rude, and proud of his ignorance.
He seems to despise pretty much everything, there is no pleasing him, which is a shame, he seems to have so much going for him.
One thing that does bug me is some of the comments you see on the times.uk site after his articles. Many Britons insist that the US is nothing more than straight roads, 55 mph, muscle cars which can't turn, basically everything JC tells them to believe.
As someone who is very proud to live in California, ride motorcycles, drive fun cars, I'm bothered that he never mentions what a motoring paradise so many parts of this country are. California, Montana, the rockies, the list goes on forever. And nary a rude redneck in sight... :)

Wrong. The People who he badmouthes the most, are the british themselves. Not just that they can?t build good Cars (except some of us Germans come along to help :p *kidding*) or at least buy good cars he recomends but everything. Clarkson hates everything about "modern Britan" and if you just watch the News Segment of the Episodes that comes quite clear.

On TG noone takes more bashing than the British. But apart from that ... you don?t take that serious, do you? Boy, if I ?d take the constand bashing we Germans receive on TG serious, i?d have developed a gastric ulcer a log time ago. I just thing it?s terribly ... funny. They are just making fun with the help of some stereotypes. So what? I?ve told my dearest friends much worse to tease them and we all laughed about it.

clearly you havent been reading or even listening to his many forms of media.

he does bash the british, he does it an awful lot, at least as much as he bashes america.

and whats so bad about trying to prove british is the best? i know we dont have a car industry any more, but lotus make good cars, TVR made good cars in a insane kinda way, Morgan, Marcos, Arial, Noble, Prodrive, Mclaren, Aston (its now british owned) Jag, (american owned, but british run)....all stupendously good car makers.

granted they dont really make mass production cars...theyre more honed and specific than that, more specialised. and i think thats what we are good at...specialized machines, because the engineering behind them is so much more than a hum drum production car. but what they do make is certainly better than what others in the world make, especially america.

i cant belive you said everyon makes better cars than the brits..... wow, just wow, Aston Martain, noble, prodrive, lotus etc...i know half of them arent british owned, but they are british run and british engineered and thats worth more than who owns it.

to top that off, Nissan factory in sunderland, is sooo good theyre actually shipping those QuashQai things back to japan because they want them!

i mean him saying british is best, is just the same as what the americans do, or the italians, or the germans, or the french.

you ask any native person "whats best" and they'll tell you their country is....its called patriotism and id be worried about some one who didnt at least show a little of it from time to time.

Don't you only get 91 in Cali?

Yes, I guess he is an equal-opportunity basher. He rips into British over-governmentalizing everything, the Germans (and I'm first generation American, parents both German, and I speak it) for their lack of humor, and us Americans for our laziness and stupidity. Even the Japanese and other Asian countries get their share.
Everyobody's got something wrong, haven't they? :)

Top Gear is popular mainly because of Jeremy's inflammatory remarks regarding just about everything. Why should America become an exception to this treatment?

For I think of myself as a Californian more than an American, or as James put it, "We'd been warned by some American modernists - i.e. Californians - that the southerners wouldn't take kindly to any of our light mockery of the things they hold dear - Bush, heterosexuality, NASCAR, Country and Western, short hair... "
I agree.

I believe that Jezza is the world's greatest troll. Nobody trolls better than he.

Whether it's an inflammatory remark made during one of his many TV/DVD appearances, or it's a tyrade of abuse served up in print, he seems to love winding people up ... which is what makes him so lovable. Not to mention incredibly amusing to those who get exactly where he's coming from ...

JC even managed to 'insult' Belgium and Belgians on a few occasions. The thought never even crossed my mind to go whine somewhere about it.
Btw, they've taken the mickey out of France and French people far more times than the US. It goes a long way back into history, when America hadn't even been discovered yet. I never see a French person complaining about being called a 'treacherous, land-burning, workshy peasant'.
Grow a spine and some rhino hide, get a sarcasm and irony detector, and enjoy the show instead of taking every single thing dead serious. Bad for your health if you do...

^Bad for your bank account, as well, if you are of those people who sue over anything you don't like.

91 what, octane? Yes, that is super-unleaded here. Is there higher octane back east?

Sorry, I know this is OT, but... what? Seriously? 91 octane is the highest octane you can get at a regular garage in the US?

No, 91 is the maximum avail on the west coast due to strict emissions laws, but when i lived in the midwest and east coast, 93 is avail in most gas stations.

In most places, yes. There are gas stations that sell 92-93-94 but they are few and far between from what I've heard. I still have yet to see anything over 91.

Um... the higher the octane, the lower the emissions... it burns cleaner. I don't think that's the reason.

Wow. That's pretty unbelievable. I didn't even realise that.

My local gas station in suburban Sydney has 92 as standard, 95 as premium, 98 as performance petrol, and now has 2 bowsers dedicated to 100 octane 5% ethanol racing fuel.

I have a 7 year old Alfa that's meant to run on 95 as a bare minimum... what do you guys do with cars like BMs and Mercs that have Premium minimums?

Yes, but is it RON or RON + MON / 2?
See, we in the states use the R+N/2 method for determining octane. I know in Europe they just show the RON number.
See the article on it on Wikipedia for more... :)
