Ok, I hate to simply copy other people's work, but the darkened sky effects they use on TG are awesome, so I thought there should be a thread dedicated to people's edits using this effect, maybe discuss the different ways people go about doing it, as I'm sure a lot of people have given it a go.
I've tried a few searches as I thought there could be similar topics, but couldn't find anything, so apologies if there is.

I've given it a go on a couple of roller coaster pictures, just because they were the first I could find with blue skies

I just selected a feathered eliptical selection, inverted it, and took the levels down on the corners, then desaturated it a bit.

Any tips? And how do you go about it, and lets see your edits!

Looks good, but no real suggestions as if I were to try that, it'd look like utter crap.

Here are some I fooled around with Picasa a bit on. I was going for a Top Gear style. Even took the pics myself, too bad it was at a crowded car show so I couldn't get many shots of a car by itself.

I know this isn't potatochopping related, but what movie software can I use to get this effect?

The rollercoaster looks stunning

what did you do to the second one?

mmmm.... flamingo land.

I'd try the same but with a very dark dark purple and just using the multiply filter.

something like this....

I also put a layer of gray over it using the vivid light filter.

I used Picasa for mine. It's real easy and took me less than 5 minutes to do each picture.

I really like your edit of the Renault crash, Blythy. Very well done.

The proper term for this effect is called "vignetting effect"

I also always see them playing with a sort of 'eye' shape effect. Tried to replicate it on photoshop...

I have no archive footage on my pc at the moment but I'm flying over to WA to visit my brother who has the cokin filters in June. He just bought the 07 Subaru Tuned by STI special edition (only 200 in Australia) So I will post my video work here in july.
