Germans claim 'fattest Europeans' title
May 2 02:25 PM US/Eastern

FRANKFURT, Germany, May 2 (UPI) -- Germany has laid claim to the dubious distinction of being the most obese country in Europe, the International Association for the Study of Obesity reports.

The report said 75 percent of German males and 59 percent of German females are overweight, and cited several factors, the Suddeutsche Zeitung newspaper reported. Among them were poor diet, mounting consumption of alcohol, and less and less physical activity in a country where 60 percent of people would rather drive than walk.

Germany nudged out last year's three-way tying countries of Britain, Cyprus and the Czech Republic.

Overall, more than 50 percent of Europeans are overweight, the report said, warning of serious economic consequences if left unchecked, particularly among children.

Health specialists said extra weight will cause premature aging and disease, leaving that generation less functional, the report said.

"Measures against obesity should be regarded as a healthcare priority, and obesity therapy should be as serious as that of any other ailment," said Dr. Vojtech Hainer, president of the European Association for the Study of Obesity.

******

So, let's see..

Per the US Centers For Disease Control: Percent of noninstitutionalized adults [in the US] age 20 years and over who are overweight or obese: 66.3

Per the stats at EASO, 75% of German men are overweight or obese, and 59% of German women are overweight or obese. Giving an average of... 67%!

Yes, Germans are now fatter than Americans.

Hm, and this just in from the BBC: Three quarters (75%) of Britons are overweight. (source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/insideout/yorkslincs/series7/buster_bloodvessel.shtml)

Who's calling who fat now?

It's because of the beer. :p

What an achievement! :S However Italians are fat and overweight, too.

Hang on I though Britain would easily top the list (especially up here), Ive never once suspected Germany as a nation on overweight people.

makes sense. just look at their heavy diet and consider the heavy beer consumption. on both counts, germany is very similar to the united states. we both love red meat, starchy foods, and carb-loaded foods. and of course, we love our beers. and as the report states, germans love to drive, and so do americans. automobilia is heavily engrained in both of our cultural identities.

i bet germans and americans would rank near the top of a list of countries with the happiest people.

bier und wurst FTW!

but come on, 67%? i'd say there are no more than 15% who are really obese and unhealthy...a few kgs too much won't hurt anyone...and while the amount of obese people and especially kids is certainly on the rise, so is the amount of people who do lots of sports. the paths at rivers, in fields and woods here are packed with runners and bikers in the evenings and on weekends...

Aye, but fat people in Italy are mostly older people.

On the other hand, Germans have an unhealthy number of young
people who are extremely overweight.

Oh no! Britain isn't the worst country in Europe at something! But we always win at this!

WE'RE NOT THE FATTEST! WOOO!

Yeah, there are some fat people around, but none of those really, really fat ones.

Morbidly obese: bigger Britons need fatter furnaces

Wed Apr 18, 3:16 PM ET

LONDON (AFP) - Britain's growing obesity problem is forcing crematoria to build bigger furnaces because of the broader coffins of their expanding clientele, officials said Wednesday.

Standard coffins are typically between 22-26 inches (55-65 centimetres) wide, but many undertakers now use super-size 40 inch-wide casks to accommodate bigger bodies.

I just realised how funny German would sound come out of the mouth of a fat, high-pitch voiced bloke.
