I've been wanting to building something like this for some time. The Atlas LL8 (or Vortec 4200) has much potential as an engine. In its stock 4.2l form it puts out 270hp-291hp.

More information about the Atlas series of engine can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_Atlas_engine

You know those early Firdbirds originally came with SOHC I-6's? Pontiac retired it when they went to the 2nd gen cause of it's height.

The thing I find impressive about these motors is they do show that if GM put some effort into an engine with such 4 valve heads and the like, they can produce a good motor. It may not hat 100hp/liter, but then it's a truck engine (literally).

This engine makes 270 (older)- 290hp ('07 models) and similar torque i lbs-ft. It's only a 4.2 liter engine, yet the 5.3 liter LS v8 in the Pontiac GXP only makes 300hp and 320lbs-ft.

The only bummer with that engine, is it's quite ugly.

Jetsetter: It see you found my post with the links

Yes, I know. Quite an interesting engine. I posted a topic about it a few months back.

Yes, thank you.

If I was building a first gen f body, I'd have to use somekind of V8. Either a big block or a modern LS engine. Anything else just seems wrong.

Looks good apart from the paint colour and the slightly blingtastic wheels. Nice to see someone having a go with an I6 instead of the V8 which gets boring fast.

Don't bad mouth the Torque Thrust.

one of my older co-workers had a firebird that looked really similar to that (color and everything) all except it had drag tires on the rear, and on the side it said "Sleepwalk, yeah right!" not that i know what thats supposed to mean
