Amazing that that car is still running. Over here, they were very popular for a while, but fell apart rapidly. Most of them reached their terminal mileage back in the 90's and have wound up in junkyards.
Fiat's parts support in the States (abysmal at best, even when they were here) was part of the problem - even when the cars were new.
Well, it's rare over here aswell, but rust is our biggest problem, parts are no problem, you could lift a whole engine out of a Fiat Uno for example. And those engines are pretty durable aswell.
The world would be much better off if those happened to have been made out of better steel ,
if you ever need some help with suspension tuning feel free to send me a private message, I have a buddy (Steve Hoelscher) who is a 5 time national autocross champ in fiat X1/9s (now he drives a mki mr2) and is really friendly as far as helping people out, ill get his contact info for you if you wan't. He surely helped vanguish many of the false tuning myths that were floating around in the MR2 community (concerning spring rates and weight bias)
I've taken the car apart in the meantime and I hope to have it ready next spring...
Still not sure about the paintjob, I'll most probably go for a seventies orange-red as seen on Miuras and Countachs.

But I liked the old two-tone look, so maybe you guys can help me. What do you think looks best?
The orange/gold two-tone on the Miura, if that's an option, actually looks better than the orange/grey on that X1/9. Some two-tone looks good, like grey/silver on some Mk1 MR2s I've seen, but not so much that orange/grey, which just looks like it wasn't completely washed.
Seriously: if it was my car I'd go for the second option. The two tone colour scheme suits the car rather well because it somehow looks authentic, but the paint on picture No. 4's just too much for me.
I agree the Miura is in a different league. Interestingly they were both designed by Marcello Gandini (who also designed the 1st 5-Series BMW, the Countach, Alfa Montreal and others).
I've tried gold and I suppose it might look too fancy, it needs a car like the Miura to work, I guess.
I do agree #4 might be a bit too much. Originally #2 was my least favourite, but I'll try it on a different picture, I think it starts to grow on me.
I've tried to polish the outer rim of the wheels before and it didn't stay shiny for too long, I guess magnesium is different to aluminium in this matter.
I was thinking of lime green before, I guess it's a bit too flashy for me, also the orange is warmer. But I haven't completely decided yet.
