The "New Toys" Thread

^ That's awesome. The new Mac Pros looks great.

Are you pairing it with an Apple Cinema monitor?

Naw, I haven't bought a cinema because I already have a Benq 22". But I don't like the Benq because it has some banding issues in dark colors like shadows. I may replace it with a Dell 22".

Not technically in my hands yet, but will be this friday!

  • Nikon d80
  • Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 Macro
  • MB-D80 vertical grip with extra battery
  • ML-L3 wireless remote
  • Tamron c-pol

Congrats! That'll be a great starter DSLR setup.

Yeah, i'm freshly broke and already thinking about upgrades. I'm thinking sigma 10-20 or a 70-200 (maybe both, but which one first?). Feh... i'll just enjoy this for now.

EDIT: <3 Alok!

After waiting for a weeks i finally got this special little laptop, the Asus Eeepc :)

This is the 4GB model with a webcam.

It's really small and extremely light, so really ideal for carrying around with you. The battery lasts pretty long.
The fact that it's so small does make it hard to work with for a longer period of time though.

So far everyone who's seen it loves it.

We had a thread on it a few months ago:

I have some more photos here:

It seems very nice, but the screen is a little bit to small compared to the body size :-/

I wouldn't mind having one though :-D

I've seen the Eee in person. It's a nice form factor but I think it's idiotic how they put the speakers on the sides of the screen. It would be a lot more usable and perfect if the screen took up the whole width of the top.

Still, congrats. ;)

The screen is indeed the biggest problem with the thing. With most programs it isn't such problem, but on the web it's a whole different story. In the photo you see that the forums adapt to the screen res, but quite a few websites don't.
Firefox is open in the photo but i also use Opera on it. And I love the zoom/ unzoom function in that with big pages.
You have to adapt a bit. There's also a big user base so far making these kind of nuisances easier to live with.

Asus have announced they are going to make one with a 10 inch screen.

One of the most expensive parts of a laptop is the screen, if you make it bigger it's going to cost more.. and the one asus announced is going to be significantly more expensive. It might also have a new cpu/chipset.

I've needed a new phone for ages, so i got one :D

3.2 autofocus camera and is very light, especially compared to my old 3510i...

Now i actually want to take it with me :)

Indeed it does. I'm looking for a new phone because mine just died. For the next 6 months I have my sister's Samsung D900, which I don't really like it because I don't like slim phones - one reason I liked my 6680. Unfortunately I'm on Pay As You Go so no chance of upgrades for me, and that phone is ?150 Sim Free. And I want a computer upgrade, so it looks like i'll be shoved back with my Dad's old 6600. Either that or I find something cheap on eBay.

My coworker has that Samsung phone, but the only thing I don't like about it are the touch-sensitive controls on the front. There's no haptic feedback so I never know if I actually pressed it or not.

That was their first intention, but they have now decided not to make a 10" model. Instead they showcased a 8" model in CES. But it doesn't really help anything because the resolution is still the same as in the 7" model.

I know what you mean, it's going to take a while to get used to them. The selection buttons flash off and on when you touch them, but the call/end call buttons don't. Needs a long charge so I'll have to wait to play with it some more :D

Sony NWZ-A816 (4GB)

https://pic.armedcats.net/2008/01/12/sonynwza818.jpg

It's a cracking little player, just what I was after. Exactly the same layout as my old one which is good as it's a very good, simple layout. Drag-and-drop capability is a HUGE improvement over my old one and it still manages to create the useful libraries that the old one did. The colour screen is brilliant, I've watched a few episodes of Scrubs on it and it's brilliant quality and perfectly watchable, even with a fairly small screen.
The best bit about it is the sound quality, it is stunning. I-Pods, even with expensive aftermarket 'phones just can't compare. I never thought an MP3 player could produce so much bass, but still keep crystal clear sound. The headphones it comes with are awesome as well. They have a "sub" around the outside then the mid range driver is in the bit that goes into your ear canal.
It's even cheaper than the equivalent IPod, Sandisk etc. My only regret is not spending the extra ?20 to get the 8GB version.
