Race car paintjob needed

Well, one thing that I'm rapidly learning is that we want to think about paintjobs in terms of how little prep time (taping, etc) is required to fix it after the inevitable off-track excursion. The fiberglass bodywork is fairly easily damaged (although it is easy to repair) but then you have patches that have to be painted.

The bodywork itself comes in three sections, which you can see if you look close at the side view. So design elements that carry onto each section might have to be masked for repair. And the most easily damaged sections are right around the wheels and the nose, of course.

I do like big and bold, though. That last design is very cool.

I'm using Photoshop CS2. I using hue/saturation to change colors. If you want me to go more in depth, I can.

That's actually pretty interesting, and nothing I would have come up with on my own!

It's giving me a lot of food for thought, that's for sure!

Steve

Thanks, its my 787B knockoff paint job with different colors. You want me to do different color combinations? Like switch the stripe colors?

Well, after a year, it was finally time to take action. One thing that heavily influenced the end result was the ability to repair crash damage. The front fenders, for example, can be fairly vulnerable in an impact, and so I wanted to avoid a design where a repair to the edge of a fender would require three colors of paint and extensive taping.

So, without further ado, here is the outcome...

I will be adding some white stars to the blue section along the fenders in this coming week.

I'm sorry, but it looks far too obvious, and ghastly.

Especially if you add stars to it. I understand your point by looking at your helmet. but I don't think the outcome looks half as good as it could..

Just my 2 cents worth.

I'm quite open to taking donations for improving it, although two cents won't get very far... :)

I actually don't like the way the blue just turns in to red on the middle... But i believe its better than the all blue :)

Yeah, no doubt that's the toughest part of the paint, without getting into the complexity of trying to blend it back -- which again becomes a huge issue if you have to fix something; it never matches without spending hours and hours. I think the stars will enforce the flag motif and make that a bit less jarring, though.

Steve, in situations like these, you must stand strong to uphold the ancient tradition of racing drivers with bad taste.

You must maintain the values! You must!

I like it. Do I see that the front bit is inspired by my chop though?

We certainly liked your colors. In a world where labor was free and cars never got damaged, your design would have been at the top of the list!

But in the end, most of the shaping was heavily influenced by the way the paint was laid out to start with...

became

which was the template for the actual paintjob.
