I'm going to be upgrading my graphics card and I will need a new PSU at the same time. I'm looking at a Cooler Master Real Power Pro 750 and a PC Power & Cooling 610

I am open to any suggestions. I plan on having at least 5 hard drives (possibly 7 or 8, but I only have 3 now). I also can't decide weather to buy one now that will simply take care of a new graphics card (BFG Tech 8800gt) or one that will power whatever I need forever.

7 or 8 Hard drives? Shit that's quite a collection of ... something ... you've got going there.

Your main problem is gonna be heat - so cooling and air dispersion is priority #1. Power (wattage) not so much, but still, I think I'd have to recommend a Thermaltake PSU, possibly even bigger than 750w especially if your running anything higher spec than 7200rpm SATA II (like 10,000rpm raptors)

Well, Quakecon is near where I live and there is a lot of um, file sharing that goes on. They will all be 7200 rpm as far as I know. I'm not worried about cooling. By that time I will have dual 120mm fans and dual 80mm fans, one of each sucking and one of each exhausting.

New videocards don't require as much power as you think, HDDs are getting more efficient, as well. All of this results in you needing a less powerful PSU. Both of those units are a bit overkill, as a result. Your average gaming system uses about 250w under load.

I can whole-heartedly recommend the Enermax Liberty 500w. Had one in my rig for going on two and a half years, it's been the most trouble-free PSU I've ever worked with.

It's very quiet an unassuming with the 120mm fan, too. With its modular cable system, you can simply buy extra power cables if you buy more HDDs. The cables are fairly cheap, about $10 each.

Enermax is just about the only remaining company to make their own PSU, which means they consistently produce better units. Their own reputation is at stake, if they don't.

Yeah, 500-600W is plenty.

I'm ok with some overkill (now the wiring in my apartment may not be but thats a different story). I think I'll probably go with the PC Power & Cooling one unless anybody has had any problem with that unit/company.

Hmm, interesting, now, think I'll be able to hear it over 4 case fans plus graphics card fan?

I'm another Thermaltake fan. You might look at FSP units too before you decide for sure.

cooler master, thermal take, corsair, seasonic are all pretty good.

not sure about antec psu, never tried them

Antec PSUs are really good.

I think I'm going to go for at least 700 watts. This summer I plan on putting in a RAID 5 setup with 4 500gb hard drives along with an 8800GTS 512 (its only 20 more dollars than an 8800GT), the newegg power calc says I need 716 watts.

so does that end up as a single 2Tb hdd in your OS? dont you find that annoying because you dont have the drive partitions, what are you gonna do when you format?

And if you want, spend a tiny bit more money and you can get 9600gt sli with the money you spend on 8800gts, unless its really cheap, then there is no contest.

what board are you going with?

Well, I'm not doing a new build, I'm just upgrading the weak points in my current one. I'm keeping my motherboard and it does not have SLI so I have to have a single card plus the GTS is only $250 compared to the GT at $230 and the GTS is noticeably faster. Its not in the budget now to get a new motherboard/processor/ram plus, the ones I have are still pretty good. The only problem with them is the motherboard/processor is socket 939.

With the RAID 5, it ends up with 1.5tb of data protected storage on my OS. That will be in addition to my other 3 drives. So 4 drives will show up on my OS, I will just organized the 1.5tb with folders. I don't find no drive partitions annoying. My current three (160,250 and 250) are all single partition.

I have a friend who swears by Sparkle, but I'd go with Antec.

Also if you are going to have that big of a raid 5 set-up in your main pc I would suggest getting a hardware raid set-up. By hardware raid I mean actual hardware raid, not the Nvidia/Promise software raid which is all done in the driver. Buy yourself a good 3Ware card or similar.

I will need a raid card anyways because I only have 4 sata ports on my mobo, 3 of which are being used right now.

I want to buy a PSU powerful enough that when I get a new mobo/cpu I can use the same one, and I also was to be able to overclock the shit out of my processor until then.

sorry, i worded it wrong. i thought you are only gonna run the raid 5 setup and not gonna have any other drives, which will end up with only c drive.

what are you gonna do with that much space?? 1.5tb plus three other drives.

porn?

I'll just say Media. Quakecon's BYOC + shared files = drives fill up FAST.
