You don't get a choice. The cheapest Dusters (no radio, no electric windows etc) come with a 1.4 litre petrol engine. All others come with a 1.5 litre Nissan diesel engine, last seen in the Qashqai. As mine has some toys; it had to be the diesel.

At a guess - budget. The majority of XC70s on eBay that have sold recently haven't been in-budget. Alternatively, an 850R makes for a more interesting program - it's more likely to break down than a more recent XC70, and conversely with less electronics it's probably easier to repair.
