It's a tough call. I mean, if you needed something better now, you could've got a 9800 for about $30 more than the price you paid for that second 8800GTS. Then you could've sold your first 8800GTS for a nice price and got some of your coin back. Then the 9800 would probably tie you over till the 10 series arrives, and in the meantime you'd have a quieter/cooler/less-power-hungry setup.

However, I'm not exactly sure how the 9800GTX compares to a 800GTS SLI setup though as far as exact performance numbers.

    Modified Benchmark_GPU.bat to run DX9.
Dunno why it didn't put the details at the top like it did for you Viper,
but I ran DX9 highspec 64 bit no AA at 1680x1050:

I actually didn't know about this "Benchmark_GPU.bat" before, so that's why I was mentioning this Assault level, which I think is quite a bit heavier than the Island timedemo by the looks of it.

Don't know if I made the right choice or not, it was a bit of an impulse buy I guess.

Well, this is how the 9800GTX performs on Crysis at Medium settings:
    http://www.overclockersclub.com/revi..._9800gtx/6.htm

Looks like your SLI setup may be better

And I know for some games, just going from 30 to 40fps makes a huge difference to the eye. DiRT is a good example. If that game drops even a bit under 30fps, it starts to get noticeably choppy, but if you can keep it up around 40fps, it looks very smooth.

The great thing about the benchmarks is that they all are consistent. They don't depend on any user input and nothing random can occur. They'll always be the same and it's an easy way to compare systems.

Yeah, they aren't the hardest on the system, but it's a good average test of easy and hard stuff.

That's the weird thing, in Crysis, with 20FPS, if you didn't have the FPS display on and didn't know any better, you'd swear it was running at 30FPS or so.

Yeah, Crysis oddly looks fine at fairly FPS. It just goes way too low though at 1920x1200 on my PC. In the 10-20 ballpark.

Sounds like a very expensive pc setup you got there I only wish i have that much budget on a pc.

I'm prob gonna replace the E4300 pretty soon, E8xxx sounds quite promising in terms of overclocking, guess its time for a new upgrade : )

Honestly, it's not that bad. ESPNSTI did a good job of picking good parts that aren't rape-you-in-the-ass expensive but still gives you awesome performance. Spending tons of money on top of the line stuff is just a waste.

Hell, I built a similar PC to his (slightly better CPU, less RAM as I'm on XP, and only a single video card) for around $800 (guts only as it was an upgrade).

Computers are cheaper than you might expect if you do it right.

Holy Cow if I'm reading that right, I get about the same FPS on the same settings with a 8800GTS as they do. The Holy Cow part comes when they are using a Quad-Core Intel and I'm just using an AMD X2 3800+.

And I thought I was getting bad performance.

Still winning. I think I misstated the score last time. It was actually 15890, not 15990.

I think I can defeat you, once I get my AS5 and replace the crappy thermal paste I currently have.

    Here we go.
    Wolfdale E8400 @ 3.0 (Stock) w/ Tuniq Tower
    Gigabye GA-EX38-DS4
    eVGA Geforce 9800GTX @ 675/1200 (Stock)
    4GB (2x2) Patriot Viper DDR2-800 RAM
2x Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB (No RAID 0 as of yet, when I get Vista 64 I will)
    Samsung DVD Burner
    Coolermaster Cosmos 1000 w/ 5 120mm fans

Here's my result from last night. Everything stock.

    12845 at full stock.

Here's my overclocking specs that I'm currently aiming for:
    E8400 @ 4.0 (444x9)
    9800GTX @ 750/1300 (Conservative, I know)
    RAM @ DDR2-1066 @ 5-6-5-16 timings (Loosened from 5-5-5-15)
With those specs I'm going to hope for a near-16k score.

EDIT: Oh and at stock on Crysis @ 1680x1050 with the Very High XP Patch and the Shader 1.3 Patch, I get ~45 FPS. Which, when my friend with his Athlon X2 5600+ BE @ 3.0 and BFG 8800GTX OC only gets about 30, is very good.
    I'm loving the 9800GTX.

EDIT2: I'm bored. Time to OC.
