Jeremy gives his verdict on BMW's new M5, Richard and James try their hand at Russian road testing, and which hatchback is hottest, the Renault Megane, Vauxhall Astra VXR or Golf GTi?

This week's 'Star in a Reasonably Priced Car' is Chris Evans.

Ahh finally Jezza's review of the M5...I know he will love it cos I read his written review already, i'm just not sure if he will forgive the looks. Unfortunatly I think it'll go faster round the track than the CLS55 but we will have to wait and see...

Oh yey they'r testing hot hatches again but wheres the Alfa 147GTA :x We just know the GTI will win

I don't know the price in England, but the GTA is more R32 than GTI rival.
But of course the GTI will win. Anyone has doubts?

Personally I'd go for the megane :p
But well, knowing top gear, i wouldnt bet against the gti :)

The M6 will also prolly be in the same segment. It would be weird to break them up.

You like tuned cars, so your visual taste is doubtful :p

^

Well i do like the megane better. But there are several reason's why i'd get a megane instead of a gti.

Quality is about the same (i know french cars lately use crappy material, but vw isnt any better either), performance about the same (im not the stig, and im not able to show the 0.5-1 sec difference on the track). Renault is safer (at least according to euro ncap rating). Bearing all this in mind, and taking into acocunt that the megane is much much cheaper... you get my point. :)

Now apart from technicalities. Megane is more unique, there are gazillion of golfs, there are more golfs on the streets than pedestrians on the sidewalk. Furhermore, they steal golfs like hell. Whichever statistics you look at you will find the golf in the top10stolen cars list. Then there's the cool factor. Golf's have a very bad image, its always those punk f&f kids with a bit of money from daddy and a fresh drivers license that drive them. Always windows down, music up, and wannabe looking cool.

Thats why i'd choose the megane over the gti. ;)

I don't like Megane's design, tbh. All Renaults, actually, and that being safer talk is crap. The Audi A4 only got 4 stars and not 5 because it hadn't a seatbelt warning. And here the F&F wannabes have renaults or opels, so I think I'll stick with the best. ;)

Why people hate Vauxhall so much??? :?

The Vauxhall Astra VXR is clearly a better car than the OVERRATED and OVERPRICED VW Golf GTi.

-It looks a LOT BETTER than the Boring Golf.

-It's more Powerful and Faster.

-It's ?1.000 cheaper and just as well equipped.

It should be the better car, but since this is Top Gear, and the goddamn show is run by Jeremy "Wanker" Clarkson, therefore they will chose the Overrated Volkswagen.

DAMN YOU TOP GEAR!!!

-It may look sportier than the Golf, but better is subjective.

-If it's the 240bhp version, it is more powerful, but is that one ?1000 cheaper than the GTI?

-It has an even blander interior than the Golf, without those fantastic seats.

Finally,
-It doesn't drive as well.

Even a portuguese magazine (here the price is ?30k for the 200bhp Astra and ?40k for the GTI) prefered the GTI. As all the british ones. And I guess all the others.

I really don't think so... It would have been stated in the first post, and he didn't drive it for the TG mag, Tom Ford (the FG guy) did that... Guess we have to wait for the next series for that...

gti is definitely a good car, but couldnt agree more with the above sentence. receives way too much pride and the price is ridiculous

The VXR version with the 240 Bhp engine costs ?18.900 - That's ?1.000 less than the Golf with 200 bhp.

VXR: 0 to 60 Mph in 6,2S - Top Speed: 152 Mph.

GTI: 0 to 60 Mph in 6,7S - Top Speed: 145 Mph.

-It has an even blander interior than the Golf, without those fantastic seats.

As for interior, it's a matter fo personal taste, I think the Astra interior looks a lot better.

Finally,
-It doesn't drive as well.

YES. It does drives well, even better than the wallowy Golf.

Even a portuguese magazine (here the price is ?30k for the 200bhp Astra and ?40k for the GTI) prefered the GTI. As all the british ones. And I guess all the others.

Really? I don't think so...

As you can see, the Astra is clearly the better car, Top Gear Sucks (sometimes...) and Jeremy Clarkson is a Knob(sometimes...)

the gti is the better car.
maybe it is not as powerful as the astra, but look at it in 4 years and with 60000 driven miles and you'll realize why.
i've driven many astra  , many golf :D , even the golf 5 gti  .
i know what i'm talking about.

can't wait for the awesome m5, but why restrict 507 bhp to 154 mph???
rubbish

great forum!! thanks to all the guys who make it possible

I love the new Astra but I don't know if this new version will be enough to beat the Golf GTi. Although the Astra is quicker in a straight line cause it's more powerfull, I think the GTi has better handling and could be much more fun. It's a car that I would buy for sure. 8)

And the Alfa is a very different car, as bihus said. The engine is much bigger, it's a N/A, and obviously more powerfull and, at least here in Portugal, much more expensive.

I hope to see a lot of tire smoke during the M5 test  I'm quite curious to know what Jeremy will say about it. It would be perfect to see the M6 being tested at the same time, but it seems that's not gonna happen :(

PS: I edited my post beacause I thought the VXR was the 2 litre 200bhp version. Sorry

i have a friend that works at a vw dealership. the dealers have polls and bets about who's customer will return back earlier. talking about quality hm? :)

And guess what...

I DID DRIVE THE GOLF GTi MK5.

Yes, it's a nice car I agree - better than the Golf GTi MK4 (Rubbish!)

Although, the new Golf it is a Tad Overrated and somewhat Overpriced for what it is - not to mention VWs are Unreliable Junk.

I drove new Astra MK5 (Hatchback 1.9 CDTi 150 Bhp) and it is is even better than a standard Golf and just as quick as the Golf GTi.

But, let's wait and see.

If Top Gear, says the Astra is the better car, than I think it will be shut the f*ck up for all those Pathetic GTi boys!

I Still maintain, the Astra is the car to buy, It has sexy looks, better interior, safer, cheaper and faster.

As for handling, let's wait and see:
