Someone Else's Problem: 14ft of sensibleness...? My '11 VW Eos

So what's the difference between this and the Golf Convertible, by the way?

Apart from the underpinnings, the most obvious difference is softtop vs retractable hardtop. You can't have a Golf Cabrio with a sunroof either :p and it's a lot quieter when being German on the Autobahn :D The Eos boot is much easier to load, and even bigger with the roof up.
The Golf is cheaper when new, and the Eos loses more value from new... but I didn't buy new, so they're fairly similar :D This engine in the Golf means GTI, giving you loads of expensive trim and badge pieces.

Very good choice, those are nice cars and pretty rare over here anyway.
(My brother has an Audi A5 convertible and that is very impressive. )

It's actually a convertible Superb, based on the same PQ46 platform :p

Ah good, it is a Skoda under the skirts.

Yup. Initially I wanted to buy one in Neum?nster (same equipment plus block heater), but when I made up my mind it was gone :(

Do you need or want a block heater up there in Kiel? :?

Need? No. It'd have been a basically free add-on with the other car, so I'd have taken it :)
There have been some stories of the windows freezing solid in the roof, essentially locking you out and requiring de-icer... we'll see when proper winter is here.

I don't think there's much need for a block heater anywhere in Germany, but it doesn't hurt. And it's always nice having a warm and toasty cabin with defrosted windows.

I went for a drive today, it was about +5C out. I usually run the Ebersp?cher at those temps to make the cabin nice and toasty but I didn't bother this time. You can clearly hear the difference when cold starting the engine vs. starting it with the cooling system already at ~60C. Primarily from the valvetrain during the first few seconds. No electric block heater (or sometimes nowadays, oil pan heater) will be anywhere near as effective as a 5kW fuel powered coolant heater though.

I was expecting something utterly sensible, boring, and well... Narf.

I'm pleasantly surprised. And add one more voice to the chorus of "hurrahs" regarding your interior colour option.

Thanks - in my mind, it is utterly sensible :D
Given the requirements I came up with - open top, winter-capable, reasonable boot, doesn't look like a French egg with a big butt - it is the most sensible choice.

Car companies like to come up with dark, non-revealing teaser shots... I just went for a shopping walk, and can play that game too.

At least you can see my VW Sima winter wheels, used as a bargaining device.

That's the narfiest convertable ever before Skoda makes a topless car

Brown leather is always great, have fun!

Ahem.. :p

Well, you might have assumed I meant post-VAG skoda. Who would buy a car outside the mighty VAG anyway? If you searched topless, sporty car you might've even ended up in a crap like third gen MX-5!?

Well, at least it's not a Passat.

This isn't a sporty car though. Fast, sure, but not sporty.
As for an MX-5, I couldn't live with its interior - both in terms of space and feel.
The VAG lineup has the added advantage of making it easier for the entire family to borrow each other's cars. I just hop into any car I can steal get the keys of, but especially the female fraction isn't that keen.

Well, at least it's not a Passat.

Yeah, this is a much nicer use for the Passat platform.

That's cute

I didn't catch it, is this replacing the Octavia or is this a funtime runabout on the side?

I don't think anyone would be cross-shopping an Eos with a MX-5.

Is this much slower than a GTi?

Capital I :shakefist: a GTi would be a Peugeot.

Comparing it with the Mk6 Golf GTI with the same engine and gearbox, that's 0.6s faster to 100 and has a 2km/h higher top speed. The acceleration is obviously due to the increased weight of the roof and convertible-related strengthening.

MWF, contain yourself!

Down there behind the knob there's also the buttons for the adaptive chassis (DCC) and the self-steering park thingy... gotta try that some day.
