Just last week someone snapped some spy pics of a new car Toyota is testing. Apparenlty the car is powered by a V10 and is making over 500HP. Its a little over 3000lbs (as with past Supras) and will cost over $100,000.

I think it's pretty obvious that this is the new Supra, and I am extatic that Toyota has gotten back into the performance market! With the numbers that thing is making, it will it will probably make some good competition for domestics like the Viper, Corvette and GT. It's a bit odd that they would choose a V10 over the traditional Supra inline-6, but it's so great to see some real Japanese muscle again! :D

Agreed. Viper will still own it though. :p

I only really see this new car beating the Corvette in terms of performance, but it's great to see a Japanese car that could even keep up with the Viper or Ford GT. It's been a long time since there has been a true high-performance Japanese car. I personally can't wait for more information about this car! :D

Erm...."ecstatic" :D
'Extatic' is actually an alternative spelling of 'ecstatic' according to Websters. It's more commonly spelt 'ecstatic', so you're right, I should have spelt it 'ecstatic'.

The spell checking police are getting out of hand - I normally spell check my posts, but I'm going to have to spell check every time now! :p

i dont think the viper will own that....V10 already at 500HP stock...think of what will happen when it lands in the hands of a jap tuner like HKS, JUN and hardcore local tunner that makes road going 9 second cars. how much does the viper have stock?

btw why do american cars have such low redlines compared to japs? i rev mine to like 7-8K and american ones jsut go to frickin 5 or 6

^ Well, we're talking about stock cars. You can tune a Nissan Sunny to beat a Viper if you have enough money. But to answer your question, the Viper has 500hp and 525 ft. lb torque.

Asking why American cars have lower redlines is a pretty complicated question, but it basically comes down to the way the engines are designed. American performance cars (like the Viper) have an incredible ammount of torque and hit their optimum power range at relatively low RPMs. With cars like the Viper, things like the engine size contribute to that. However, with high performance Japanese cars, the engines are usually very small and are running very high compression - sometimes with turbochargers etc. as well. That style of a set up makes the optimum range for power much higher, which means you have to rev the engine way higher. You have to rev a RX-8 for example to 8,500rpm for it to make its optimal 238hp, whereas a Viper needs to rev to 5,500rpm to hit its optimal 500hp.

It's still a complicated question, but thats the jist of it. You'd think a guy with a highly tuned Skyline would understand things like this. :| :p

I think he had someone else do the tuning....I don't think he did it himself.
Ahhhhh, ok. That makes sense. He's one of those then... just kidding. :p

all so true, i dont tune it myself as there is no space in hong kong to do that. i have about half a meter between my car and the neighbours car (porshe carrea 4S and CLK240) i understand about the power levels reaching at the different rpm's i thought it be to do with the gear box or whatever. moreover how can someone to afford to tune their car and have time to work. i normally drop it off and i pick it up few weeks later.

how much does a viper weigh?

i actually don't see it winning from a jap car with the same engine specs :s

but we'll see

The 2005 Dodge Viper SRT-10 weighs 3410lbs.

If this new Supra is anything like the older Supras it will be a high-performance car, but will have more "comfort" features than you'd find in the Viper - making it slightly heavier and slightly slower than the Viper. The 2005 Viper is pretty much four wheels, a massive engine and a steering wheel - there isn't much else to it. :p

If Toyota is concerned about getting the same market they did with the previous Supras, it'll definetly have air-conditioning, sat-nav, power everything etc. It would still be an amazing car, but it wouldn't be an all out muscle car like the Viper.

^true

but now the 280bhp limitation has been banned, the domestic cars will have to check their asses for approaching (and overtaking  ) jap cars :p 8)

i bet you n e tihng after a few months of the supra released some tunners gonna stick a big single turbo in it like a T88 34D and it be awesome

^ Ya, if it's a factory V10 with no forced induction, tuners will be able to get that thing well over 1000HP with little effort.

There were rumours that the new Supra was going to be a hybrid. It's hilarious to see that Toyota scrapped that and went with the ultimate in fuel inefficiency - a nice big V10. :p

The TRD version (if it comes) will be more asthetics than anything. If you want performance, you're better off doing aftermarket mods than paying who knows how much for TRD stuff.

no performance from TRD?! i got a supercharger there for my dad's T100 (pickup from around '98) and the hp went up by about 75 over the entire rev range. i dont think any other aftermarket company are going to give the soon to be mine truck any more hp than that
