Nine million people sat down to watch Lewis Hamilton bid for title glory via ITV Sport?s live coverage of the Brazilian Grand Prix.
While the 22-year-old British rookie narrowly missed out on realising his dreams, the season finale recorded the highest viewing figures in seven years.
The ratings on ITV1 peaked at a massive 10.6 million viewers, 50 percent of the television audience.
Coverage of the race itself averaged 9.0 million viewers (47pc share) with the whole programme from 4-7pm averaging 7.3 million (41pc share).
The figures make it the most watched race since 2000, and across the season as a whole they reached the highest average (3.4 million per race) since 2001 ? a 41pc increase on the 2006 season.
Mark Sharman, ITV?s Director of News and Sport, said: ?It?s been a superb season of Formula 1 with viewing figures at a six-year high.
?Lewis Hamilton might have narrowly missed out on the world championship but his impact on the sport has been huge.
?His appeal transcends the core sports audience and in the space of just one year he has become a global superstar.
?I have no doubt next year?s championship will be equally exciting.?
Lewis Hamilton?s astounding achievements in his debut season of Formula 1 have resulted in him winning the British Racing Drivers' Club?s 2007 Gold Star award.
The prestigious prize, which is awarded to the year?s most successful British racing driver in an international series, went Hamilton?s way despite narrowly failing to cap his sensational season with the world title, appeal outcome pending.
He beat IndyCar champion and Indy 500 winner Dario Franchitti by 34 points to the award, with former Toyota driver Allan McNish currently third on the back of his successful season in the American Le Mans Series.
British Touring Cars? runner-up Jason Plato took the Silver Star award for being the top Briton in a domestic series.
Both awards will be presented at the BRDC?s annual awards dinner at the The Savoy Hotel in London on December 3.
You inspired me to make this:^ Why not, we get such lines as...
"Sutil is using the Force well" and when an engine blows "Well, the Force wasnt with him then"

And for Kimi, I think he's trying not to smile harder and laugh.
Is it true that in Finland smiling in public is a bit rude?!
