This fall, the all-new 2007 LS 460 will completely redefine luxury the world over. Take off with a 380 horsepower, 4.6-liter direct-injection V8 and the world's first eight-speed automatic transmission, launching you from 0-60 in less than 5.5 seconds.
There's also an available Lexus voice-activated HDD Navigation System with Bluetooth? technology (standard on LS 460L). Inside is genuine wood trim, supple leather trim and the resonant 19-speaker Mark Levinson? Reference Surround Sound System (available on LS 460 and 460L).
An 8-gigabyte audio server is available. Another first for Lexus will be the availability of the LS in both a standard- and long-wheelbase (LS 460L) model. For rear passengers of the 460L, available amenities include a center console table, climate-comfort seats and a rear-seat massager (right rear seat only). A Premium Four-Passenger Seat package with Rear-Seat Entertainment DVD System is available for the long-wheelbase model (LS 460L). The new LS-luxury that knows no borders.

8 sounds a little unnecessary, are they just trying to outdo MB's 7speed auto? the front looks like the Mazda3 from that angle and why is it presented by LandRover?

first off .. that is the LF-S consept .. the new LS is not going to be shown untill Lexus`s press thingi at detroit..
(or just se the URL)

second.. 8 is practicall .. thing about it .. going down the autobahn in 8th gear .. think of the milage! econamy baby!
more gears = less fule at higher speeds = more fun for the rich guys

now .. if they ownly whould sell the tranny to koenigsegg :p

Well we don't have autobahns here in North America :( . To me anything above 5 gears in an auto transmission is kind of unnecessary right now.

Yeah we do!

Its called Eastern Montana!

Or any plains stretch of highway for that matter.

Oh and Montana has a speed limit like everyone else now, even in the daytime. It used to be:

I think 7 was already unnessesary, how narrow a power band must an engine have if you need 8 gears?? I ask you!

8 is just to top mb. that's it.

The press conference was this afternoon. That is where the info came from. They showed the concept as the actual car. They said styling may change just a little. And the full details and specs of the car would not be known till later this year.

7-speed autos are excellent. When the gear changes, it only has to drop back around 2000RPM before you get going again whereas on something like a 5-speed, you drop back maybe 3,4 or even 5000 RPM. It all leads to smoother power delivery and it even helps the fuel economy aswell.

8-speeds however is going to be too much I think. The only problem noted with the 7-speeders is how sometimes the tranny doesn't always know what gear it should be in. The result of this is seen in stop-start traffic, when you can occasionally get a jerk. If Lexus can pull of a 8-speed tranny that doesn't do that, it'll be an engineering achievement. I rekon the auto-industry should try cracking transmissions one at a time - Lets first master the 7-speed.

They are wrong. Nissan had an 8-speed Skyline 5 years ago. It was a CVT but it had 8 gears which you can change via paddle shift. You get this in the Japanese market Skyline GT-8--the top of the line sedan model.

In theory, you can program a CVT with as many "gears" as you want. The Honda Fit in Europe/Asia also has a CVT and its engineers programmed it with a "7-speed" step gearing.

But these CVT boxes certainly does not compare to a conventional gearbox.

If we can compare them as apples to apples, then Nissan or Honda can easily program a 9-step program to top the competition. And the race to "as many gears as you want" will never end, at least that holds true in a CVT. So we shouldn't compare a CVT to a conventional gearbox.
