Press release includes ML63 because the article is related to that aswell
Both Vehicles Powered by New 503-Horsepower AMG-Developed V8
Mercedes-Benz is unveiling two exciting new AMG high-performance models at the Chicago Auto Show, the largest auto show in North America, open to the public February 10-19, 2006 at Chicago?s McCormick Place. It?s the world premiere of the 2007 Mercedes-Benz R63 AMG, and at the same show, the ML63 AMG is making its North American debut which will go on sale in the U.S. this summer.

All-wheel-drive returns to the AMG lineup with the launch of these two new vehicles. While primary markets for AMG are Southern California and Florida, a strong contingent of AMG owners in the northern U.S. will appreciate their rare combination of power and traction.

On the outside, both new AMG models feature bolder front and rear aprons, an AMG front grille and flared fenders as well as tinted taillights and two sets of chromed twin exhaust pipes. Inside, they are fitted with AMG sport seats, a leather AMG sport steering wheel and a special instrument cluster.

First Powerplant Developed Entirely by AMG

Both vehicles are powered by the first-ever engine developed entirely by AMG, the high-performance division of Mercedes-Benz. The new powerplant is a 6.3-liter naturally aspirated V8 that produces 503 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque for zero to 60 mph test track times in about five seconds. One of the most powerful production V8s ever, the new engine boasts a wealth of exciting features derived from AMG?s highly successful racing efforts.

Built almost completely from a high-strength silicon-aluminum alloy, the new 6.3-liter features four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing, bucket tappets (rather than rocker arms) and a variable intake manifold. A first for a production engine, the cylinder bores feature a twin-wire-arc-sprayed (TWAS) coating, a new process that results in impressively low friction and running surfaces that are twice as hard as conventional cast-iron cylinders. The engine shares no parts with other Mercedes-Benz V8s, and even its cylinder spacing is unique to the new powerplant. Despite its high power, the new AMG V8 meets all current exhaust emission standards.

A High-Performance Seven-Speed Transmission

The new AMG vehicles come with a seven-speed automatic transmission that?s controlled by a Direct Select electronic lever on the steering column and by Formula-1-style manual-shift buttons on the steering wheel. Three different shift modes ? ?S? for sport, ?C? for comfort and ?M? for manual ? can be selected via a switch on the center console.

A Chassis Worthy of a Sports Car

An option on non-AMG models, height-adjustable AIRMATIC air suspension with special shocks is standard on the new vehicles, along with a specially configured version of the ADS adaptive damping system and high-performance vented and perforated disc brakes on all four wheels.

Both new AMG models boast a strong unibody platform and an effective full-time four-wheel-drive system beneath its sleek exterior. Four-wheel traction control incorporates a downhill driving aid and Hill-Start Assist, while a double-wishbone front suspension and four-link rear suspension deliver impressive on-road driving performance and comfort.

0-100 in the LWB R63 is just 5.1seconds  Just amazing pace from something so big. I can't wait til these engines slot into proper performance cars like the CLS and E-Class.

Worlds fastest minivan next to that F1 Espace thingy...

I still hate the car! Why is this the 2007 model? Is it only coming next year?
Nothing has changed since the Mercedes Vision R 63 AMG, which was presented at the IAA or is there something different?

if it doesnt sell as a chrysler pacifica, just call it a mercedes??

oh, and the cayenne turbo s will do 0-100 in 4.8s, and handle very very well at the same time. :?

is it a minivan or what??

i don't see the point of having that kind of engine in a people mover? what kind of soccer mom or dad needs the same power output as the ever so hyped Z06? i just think it is a pointless action and a waste of a good engine.

do they have to have an amg version of every car mercedes produces?

Not every car yet, although some will never get one. The A-class and the B-class dont have a AMG- version for sale yet. The SLR never had one, but that isnt a problem.

I drive a people carrier [a Seat Alhambra] and I do see why you would want a massive engine in it.

Remember, you're lugging behind the rough weight of a fleet of elephants in a vehicle with the aerodynamic properties of a housebrick. So, it's gonna be a lot less effective then the same engine in a Z06, for example.

And as it is, you're lucky to get 6 cylinders in your people carrier, there's a V6 petrol option for mine, but it's expensive.

The people carrier is, especially with 6 passengers on board, lethargically slow to accelerate, requiring skillful planning of overtaking. And if you're a petrolhead with a large family, a big-engined people carrier is basically the only option.

I'd love to be able to surprise a few 'sports' cars with a V8 MPV, or even just you average hot hatch.

But, it has to be said, not if it ends up looking like that R-class.

Well yes, the AMG V8 option is not going to expensive in the least.

I just think it is far more effective to restrain yourself with the van and buy and actual performance machine instead. The money is about the same, I just see more benefit of having 2 vehicles, rather than a combination.
