Welcome to the 2008 Bahrain Grand Prix.

2005wallpaperbahrain400.jpg

Firstly, my apologies for the delay in this thread being started, this was due to the fact I have been on holiday this week.

Kimi Raikkonen scored his first win of 2008 in Malaysia to be only 3 points off Lewis Hamilton now in the championship. A different podium in Malaysia saw Kubica and Heikki up there, showing that there are three teams at the front this season.

Toyota looked strong, Williams fell away badly and Honda look to still be heading in the right direction. RBR need something special in the next couple of races to show that this wont be a wasted season.

Here are the questions.

1) Who will get pole and who will win?
2) Who will be the stronger of the two BMW drivers.
3) Toyota were strong with Trulli at Sepang, can he keep it up in Sakhir?
4) Williams looked bad all weekend, can they turn it around here?
5) Positions for Bourdais, Button and Barrichello.
6) Who will be on top of the championship at the end of this race?

First practice begins this friday, with the race on Sunday. Here's hoping it is a good one.

Let the discussion begin.

Still Hamilton. I predict a double DNF from Ferrari in the heat, because their engines had to go through the Malaysian oven.

Balestre passes away aged 86

By Jonathan Noble Friday, March 28th 2008, 16:50 GMT

Former FIA president Jean Marie Balestre has passed away at the age of 86.

He was best known for being the president of FISA from 1979 to 1991 and also of the FIA from 1986 to 1993.

Prior to that, however, he was a founding member of the French national motorsport association, the Federation Francaise du Sport Automobile (FFSA), becoming its president in 1973.

During that period he also established FISA, and became heavily involved in the organisation's battles with FOCA over the control and finances of Formula One in the early 1980s.

Eventually Balestre agreed to a compromise deal with FOCA chief Bernie Ecclestone and they duly signed the first Concorde Agreement.

Remaining in change of FISA, Balestre began a crusade to improve safety in the sport - campaigning hard for the ban of turbo engines in 1989.

But Balestre's actions led some within the sport to criticise him for abusing his power - especially following the Suzuka controversies of 1989 and 1990 between Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost.

Senna in particular heavily criticised Balestre for what he felt was a campaign to favour Prost - and the Brazilian's comments in the winter of 1989 prompted Balestre to demand an apology if the then McLaren driver was to be issued with a superlicence for the 1990 season.

In 1991, after Balestre lost his role as president of FISA, Senna revealed that his collision with Prost at Suzuka in 1990 was the result of his anger at Balestre refusing to help change the side of pole position for that race.

Speaking in an emotional press conference at the 1991 Japanese Grand Prix, Senna said: "I tell you if pole had been on the good side last year, nothing would have happened because I would have got a better start. I would have been first into the first corner without any problem.

"But it was a result of a decision, a bad decision, influenced by Balestre. I know that. we know that from underneath. And we all know why, and the result was the first corner (accident). It was not my responsibility, I did contribute to it, yes, but it was not my responsibility."

Many fans will also remember Balestre for crossing the track shortly after the start of the 1989 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, when he was lucky not to be hit by the Osella of Nicola Larini.

Balestre eventually lost his presidency of the FISA in 1991 after losing the election to Mosley. Two years later, facing almost certain defeat to Mosley in the FIA role, he stood down from that role and proposed FISA be abolished completely. He carried on as president of the FFSA until 1996.

The current French motorsport federation president Nicolas Deschaux told TF1: "This is a tremendous loss for motorsport. He always knew how to carry the voice of the institutions he managed."

Former grand prix driver Jacques Laffite told L'Equipe: "We drivers loved him so much. He did a lot for us. We owe him enormously."

Toyota was strong here last year, with Trulli battling the Renaults and finishing in 6th. Since Toyota has looked stronger this year, and they were the only team to test here with Ferrari over winter, I think they'll have a similar result. I would say 5th or 6th in the race for Trulli, while Glock finishing further back, if he finishes at all.

FIA are to set maximum lap time limits prior to next weekend's Bahrain GP following chaotic scenes during qualifying in Malaysia.

The problems arose in the dying seconds of Q3 when the majority of drivers were trundling back to the pits in an effort to save fuel having completed their final flying lap.
Some were so slow that the official F1 timing screen read 'stop' creating a dangerous situation with other cars that were still trying to complete their flying lap,
Drivers had to fight their way through the traffic narrowly avoiding slow moving cars, some of whom were in the middle of the racing line.

Debacle

The debacle resulted in both McLaren drivers being penalised for holding up Nick Heidfeld and prompted calls for qualifying to be changed before there was an accident.
The FIA are expected to announce new rules within the next few days with time limits imposed, likely to be 120 percent of a normal lap time, to stop drivers returning to the pits too slowly.
A FIA spokesman said: "The matter is under discussion and our clarification to the teams and drivers will be that cars returning to the pits having completed their flying lap or laps will be required to do so within a time that we will set.
"This could be approximately 120% of the 'normal' time as we do to prevent drivers going very slowly to the grid to save fuel."

Found this on lfsforum, but with no link to a source. But it seems like something the FIA would do.
