2009 F1 Car Launches

It has come to my attention (days late) that the fin on the engine cover of the McLaren is translucent (they say transparent in the thread I found this out on, but transparent would mean fully see through, like glass, which it is not - however, it is semi see through). There is debate going on about whether it is or isn't, what do you guys think?

Attention to detail is what I lack :p

From the pics I've seen it appears translucent... it is certainly not "transparent"...

and thats translucent
otherwise it would be like glass
but how have they done that? assuming it's carbon fibre

It's an optical illusion. Look how you can't see through the window behind.

Also try this Force India picture: The O that you're seeing is the A in reverse.

It's a reflection of the inside near wheel. Why would you write Potenza backwards on the far tyre?

As with the O, all it's doing is mirroring the other half.

any explanation for this then?
because im still convinced its translucent
it seems to perfectly placed to be the reflection of the other side

im not convinced the first one looks like a reflection and the second one doesnt even make sense.... why would u see a black, light absorbing wheel through the material but not the light from the window behind it? if its transulcent enough to see that through it id be expecting to see more than just a wheel

Honestly, I think we are seeing both here. The "O" pic is reflection, but I still believe the fin is translucent.

this is wierd, its either coincidence that the photog lined up some reflections or it is actually see thru. but then id expect to see a little more than just one line. for being transulcent it gives a prett y clear view of whats behind which isnt that normal.

usually transparent material diffuses the light so much you could hold something an inch away and barely see it.

if this thing is translucent then its only that end bit of the fin, i dont think it is further up. might be a fibre glass material rather than CF

First pics of the BMW.

[/QUOTE]

The continuing line in this picture can't be a reflection of the wing bracket. The fin would have to extend between the two parts of the bracket for that to happen and we have seen in profile shots that it doesn't...

Lol, this see through thing is hilarious...I really doubt it's see through, because then it would have to be made of plastic, which is not F1 like...

its amazing to see how fussy and complex the old bmw was in comparison to the new one. The front wing especially
its almost as though we've gone back in time to where the wings were as simple as some angled CF

I dont really like the BMW. It just doesnt look right. And i think a large amount of that comes down to the colouring. It works normally but i think on this shape it doesnt work at all
i do like the steering wheel though

About the BMW: what's the winglet on the left-hand side of the engine cover for??? I mean why is it only mounted on the left?

Yeah that was a stupid picture to take. Reminds us of what a huge step back we've taken...

This picture is pretty conclusive that it is translucent.

I like that comparison pic Devon posted though, but I think it's a pretty ugly car.
