Spied: 2012 Peugeot 208

Today we can show the very first photos of the successor to Peugeots big seller 207. We suspect it will be called 208, even if some rumors are talking about the fact the Peugeot will start giving their new cars names instead of numbers.

The 208 will follow the new design with a smaller grille like the 508 instead of that gigantic grille found on the 207. Also notice the LED-day driving stripe on the front lights and the extremely short rear overhang.

Regarding the engines, the line-up will start with a three cylinder petrol engine up to a four cylinder with 200 horsepower for the GTi version that will make a new entry.

A choice of diesel engines will complete the line-up. Expect all engines to feature a start-stop system and to be very fuel efficient. Less weight compared to the 207 will also help to save fuel as well as improve the handling.

The 208 family will start with the classical 3 and 5 door hatch versions with a CC version following later on. Rumors are also talking about a coupe in style of the RCZ and a roadster with fabric roof as a more purist way to enjoy the wind and sun.
The 208 will be launched in 2012 and later on a smaller 208 based SUV could also follow to make the line up complete.

I love that 206 ad. I remember when it first came out here, it was hugely successful. New car looks good, the front's a bit fussy but at least there's no stupid grin. Do another good ad and people might buy it. The 207 was nowhere near as successful as the 206 was, here anyway.

I like how Peugeot's model number scheme allows them room for another 90 models in the 200 series (i.e. 209 - 299)

I wonder what model year will be the debut of the 299 :lol:
