i was looking for more info about this type of engine when i found the text posted here

some australian farmer had to much time hearding his sheeps, and (like he sais) "simplified" the basic 4-stroke engine...by making it 6 stroke.

what he did was keep the engine block itself, but get rid of the head with valves. instead, put a 2 stroke engine on top, where the piston seals off intake/exhaust ports of the main engine.

resulting in loads of torque, caus your head also delivers power instead of creating friction, very high mileage, the ability to run on very low octane fuel, and an ordinary 4-stroke engine, can, thanks to they system, be revved up to 20 000RPM+ (if the parts can take it)

Interesting, but I can already see where the application is going. Probably large utility vehicles like tractors and semis. Though VW might make a 6 stroke golf for the sake of argument...

yesterday, while analysing this engine, i suddenly had to think about revetec. anyone knows that? that's also a neat principe for a combustion engine

3 times as much torque as same sized conventional combustion engine!
and so rev happy

and look what i've found on another forum
Hi Guys! Brad here from REVETEC Limited. Our technology is coming to the marketplace. We have signed a large agreement already and have several vehicle manufacturers and companies who have signed MOUs with us. This is not an engine technology that will be shelved or not taken to market. We are coming within the next 24 months in very large scale production.

i love alternative combustion engines

i found yet another one! the roundengine!

can only find a pic where they compare it with the wankel engine, all the other pics/animations are flash-based :x

you have 2 pistons (as shown) which rotate counter clockwise.
in front of the lower piston, you see 2 holes, intake ports.
as the disc with pistons turn, the mixture is compressed agains the timing disk
when the piston approaches the disk, the inlet valve to the combustion chamber opens (the tube you can see below the disc), where the mixture is combusted, and it's re-entered in the circular motion behind the dsic, BEHIND it's own piston, so that one is propelled

the main benefits are variable mixture and VARIABLE COMBUSTION CHAMBER! the lower cylinder can during operation be altered to give more or less power

you also have one with 4 discs, and that's called the ringmotor (and appears to run clockwse :s)

wow this stuff is interesting, somehow got me thinkin back to my trying to fathom an electric motor which would power itself, then newton blew all my dreams outa the water

I prefer the quasiturbine myself like. check how stuff works for details.

I came up with an idea myself but I can't draw so I'll try to explain it as simply as I can. It would have to be 2 stroke as fair as I can work out.
Basically the idea is to have the piston in a cylinder that has valves and ignitors at both ends. The piston would have to be connected with a crank through the side of the cylinder. The idea is the cyclinder is powered on each upstroke and downstroke therefore loads of torque and able to rev. I also thought the engine would only use both sets of valves/ignintors when needed to help with fuel efficiency.
If your still awake anyone see any problems with this idea.

People with too much free time have come up with alternative engines since the invention of the motorcar. As there is no recently discovered materials or crazy physics used than there is a very small chance that these designs will ever be widely used.

Even if the design is very efficient than the production costs, reliability, durability will simply prefer the older model. There is a reason why the combustion engine hasn't changed much since the invention of the four-stroke engine.

1876: Nikolaus Otto working with Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach developed a practical four-stroke cycle (Otto cycle) engine.

a bit like the revetec engine you mean

 Yeah basically the same concept just with a slightly different way of doing it.
I'm a student what else am i supposed to spend my time doing.
