92k audio is not enough

Hi !

I thought the consensus of opinions, back in May, was that 128k audio only takes a tiny fraction more than 92k audio and makes a significant difference in sound quality.

But, I now see that the new TopGear download is 92k MP3 sound.

This is even more important now, due to the features about songs !

PS In places where MP3s are torrented, nowadays no one uploads anything less than 192k and even in the old days of dialup a few years ago, 128k was the standard.

Did your parents buy you ponies when you were little?

Actually, I noticed the shortfall in audio quality as well. Music sounds tinny. Not a bad suggestion to bump it up to 128.

Better audio is always welcome !! ...I do know that fellas with lo bandwidth might not like it....but bumming it to 128k will only increase the file size by a small measure  ....or maybe we should poll this topic .....

I reacted to this as well.. The sound was a bit disappointing this time.
I'll be glad to wait 10 minutes longer for a better musical experience :D

I think Vuk was just trying to get some extra room for increased video quality. When you're limited in filesize, it's a video vs. audio game. Any increase in audio quality would mean a decrease in video quality.

We could always go back to mono sound though. :yucky: Then you could have your 128kbps audio. :p

I don't think the improvements will take an extra 30 MB.

I haven't checked, but is vuk currently using VBR? That might help a bit (lower quality during talky bits, better quality when music starts).

Can't we do 380mb episodes instead and have all the goodies?
Well, the point of 375 MB is that 2 episodes of Top Gear will fit on a 700 MB CD-R.

350 MB :p

Er, that's what I meant. I was confusing 175MB with 350. :?

I say the quality of the videos that vuk did for the last season (350 MB) is actually the best. I don't notice much difference in sound quality, but I, myself would really like to keep the episodes up to 350 MB.

I can see the idea, but wouldn't it be a little more "today" to think of how many of them will fit in to a DVD? I don't really burn CD's anymore and neither do any of my friends.

Say we would want to fit a full season of TG on a single layer DVD (4,5GB)
Normally there are something around 9 to 10 episodes per season. That would make the filesize for a single episode as big as 450MB.

I think the current system works, but 'cos I'm making a DVD out of these for myself and will watch it through my AV-setup, I would appreciate better quality sound.

Thank's for the rips anyway.

^^ But most do... Still the 450 MB stuff doesn't work either, since its gonna be 11 eps this season.
So, 400 MB would be the size to go... But resistance is big in the forum, so everybody will have to accept that, and the ones who need better quality should go for the 700MB rips that are around. I got one with 128 VBR audio.. But somehow, the quality of the video is not twice as good in it...

Anyway, I plan to get the 700MB rips and put them on 2 DVDs...

I don't want to waste more 700mb of bandwidth per week on TG and FG (both will be 1 hour long this fall)

I still think we should up the quality to 700mb - and a new series seems like a good time to do it - perhaps for the new series of Fifth Gear in Autumn.

Re: VBR - when editing video - this is really not a good idea. CBR is so much easier to work with. I definately think that 92k is far too low though. At the very least it should be 128k.
