I know that this has been discussed before, well AMD processors in general, but what I really need to know is which one is better, in everyones opinion, the new AMD X2 Dual Core processor (4800+ im looking at) or one of the FX series processors (55 or 57). So any thoughts appreciated :D

It only depends on what you will be doing with it...

Hardcore gaming: FX
using lots of programs at the same time: dualcore.

However, both cost too much and/or are too new to be good value for money, in my opinion.

All the processors you mentioned are total overkill atm. either just get a 4000+ or wait til there is games needing that kind of power.

If it has to be one of them: the X2, since its not much slower than the FX (its second core takes care of some of the background stuff, so the first one is faster in a game than a single cpu with the same speed...)

But unless you have a 7800GTX SLI system, you really don't need the top of the range one. Get another Gig of RAM...

FX for the win....I love my FX-53...though it's outdated...I still smoke the competition!

Though the FX-57 might run you a little more $$ then a dual 4800+

i would suggest going for the X2 line...

Future games will be optimized for multi-processors, and the smoothness (responsiveness etc) while just doing your things on the PC will profit from the X2 processors hugely.

Yeh I was thinking along the X-2 lines aswell, the FX-57 although a fantastic piece of kit is exceptionally expensive (over $1000) whereas you can get the X-2 4800+ for just over $900, and the cores are only 400 Mhz slower than the FX-57 which is easily balanced by the fact that it has 2 of them. It was just a point of interest really, I dont have enough money to buy either haha, but im designing a computer for future use, and getting an idea of what is out there will certainly help me, and as time passes it can be easily modded for what is up to date. But really I think that these X-2 processors are going to be brilliant for at least another year or two, before games catch up with them, but then the GPU can simply be updated.

Anyways thank you all for your thoughts, very useful.
