I heard their engines shut off 6 cylinders when in traffic or when power is not needed. How does this work? is that a special modification or all S600 engines come like this? Will new models have it?

Sorry for asking so much about Mercs but I just cant help it :?

No such thing will happen in the new S-Class. You will get the full 517BHP on tap at any time.
Janus was telling of how his parents S600 can be a bitch to drive in city traffic cos as soon as you put your foot down...BOOM the car launches forward. That obviously wont get any better in the new one cos it has 830NM of torque.

^Those figures in the new S600 are mind blowing honestly! Only Mercedes could do it, they'r the best in the engine department!

So why all the questions? You going to buy one :p

Not anymore. A couple of years ago the S600 had a naturally aspirated V12 which had this feature. They dropped it when they replaced the N/A engine with the twin-turbo V12 which was first introduced in the Maybach.

My dad wants to buy one second hand

we found one here > http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2001-MERCEDES...4572923768QQcategoryZ9855QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

looks so good and so many extras although new command would have been good.

Buying a second hand German car may cost you more in the long run than just buying on new . . . especially something as complicated as an S600!

Car only made 51k miles. Is that a lot? and u say buy a new 1 right which means 95k pounds is a better choice????

hear yourself... and dont even start with german cars.

95k pounds might not save you money but will save you a lot of time.
I'd get opinions from mechanics and auto inspectors. I see complicated German cars sitting in mechanics' garages all the time for big work. I won't jump on that ebay deal that fast. I'd take a VERY good at the vehicles history and do some research about it.

I've personally had bad luck with used German cars. Most of them refused to go past 100k miles without a major problem. It was probably due to how the previous owner drove and maintained the car.

Don't hate me for bringing this up though. I had to learn the hard and expensive way! Just be very careful when making second hand German car purchases.

I got 190E Merc at the moment with 150k miles, no major problems so far.

ok, so it doesn't happen anymore, can someone still explain how it used to work?

the cylinders which were shut off, did they still turn under force of the other cylinders?
if they do, that would mean much wearout for no reason

Yeh I also thought about that and I think that intake valves simply dont open (somehow) the rest still works as usual.

then i think it's easier to let the valves do their work, but simply turn off the fuel injection on those cylinders

and also, if you left the valves closed, the cylinder would pull vaccuum on each downstroke, reducing power

Xeon SX: I know people are going to be saying "how predictable.." and so on when I say - Buy a CLS! No seriously, the features available on the CLS are all on the old S-Class + more...

They have so much more class than the old S and new engines are expected soon which should be good :)

Either way, an S-Class is still super stuff! Make sure you get all the goodies in it eg- Distronic, pulse/massage feature on the seats etc...

We had a 190E 1994-2004 with 170,000kms on the clock and we had NO problems what-so-ever! Those were the days...

This doesn't happen as they pump air into the deactivated cylinders

Side note

I think it was about year 2003, Mercedes S600 only had about 351 horsepower...nothing to brag about until it was about 2004 when they had that 493 horpower one
