I've always used Intervideo WinDVD to play DVD movies on my laptop since it came with it. But recently, my laptop harddrive got corrupted and stopped working forcing me to shell out $230 to replace the HD and the labor. However, I no longer have WinDVD, so I was wondering if anyone could suggest any good free DVD playback software?

Thanx alot.

I would also recommend VideoLan... but I personally 'bought' WinDVD.

I think God fried your hard drive because you have a really clueless guy as your avatar... that guy drives me insane!

Thanx for the suggestions guys. And no....that is NOT me in my avatar, I'm chinese. Just a pic of a really ugly guy i found on the 'net. I saw it and i couldn't stop laughing.

Another vote for VideoLan!

haha, you had us worried there for awhile :) I use Nero Showtime, it's built into the Nero 6 suite (and probably 7 as well). Very similiar to PowerDVD.

I installed PowerDVD...it seems okay. It took over some file associations (MPEG and MP3) which pissed me off. There seems to be no setting controlling the file associations so I don't like it so much.

But alas, it was free 8)

^^ I tried it several times because of the dolby Headphones technology, but it won't play .avi correctly, the black bar with a 16:9 isn't real black, but shiny black for me... :-(

by the way, is that you on the avatar?

I'm with jensked, VLC is the answer. It will play anything without needing a specific codec, even DVD images without having to mount them. Easily the most versatile player there is.
