I have a steering wheel for the computer (albeit an old one) and I need something like GT4 or FM. You know, tons of cars, tons of tracks (especially the 'Ring), and as realistic as can be. I have played GPL demo, GTL demo, RBR demo, Driver, GTR, and a couple more I can't name off the top of my head.

GTR FIA Racing is pretty good.

NFS Most Wanted is coming out on the 15th November

Trackmania Sunrise is also quite good

I also wouldnt mind Colin McRae Rally 2005

i really dont think there is a game like gt4 for pc

i always liked gt4, but i hated the fact that i couldnt play it on pc and the fact that there were no games like it for the pc.

in terms or realism, GTR is even more realistic, but sometimes i just want to race a steet car and tune it instead of driving the twitchy racecars.

I have GTR and I feel the exact same way. As much as I like it, I wish there were more cars (that aren't race cars) that you can just pick and drive. And you know what stinks, GTR doesn't even have the 'Ring! Well, it does but you have to download it.

yea i know, i used to be active in leagues and everything in F1 Challenge 99-2002...it got boring after a while since i always had to pratice and then make setups to find that extra .1 sec so i could get on the podium. It would be nice to just race steet cars that are not so setup intensive once in a while :?

EDIT: LFS is a good game (like andy suggested) but it still doesnt have the ammount of tracks and cars..and nothing is licensed so no 'real' cars + tracks. But so far i think LFS is the closest one we got.

Mercedes Benz World Racing was also a good game with a lot of cars, but it was just too arcade :(

I really hope you're joking.

try LFS and rFactor. for rFactor some fan is making the ring but i have no idea when will it be finished since he started making it only a few weeks ago. rFactor is pretty much a game that will live on user made addon cars and tracks so in the future this game will probably have the biggest collection of quality mods.

I honestly LFS is the closest thing to RAW racing cars with no traction control, realistic handling and something which is based on pure skill, no just turning a corner and flooring the car and everything will be sorted out... it relies on very realistic control of braking and throttle whilst exiting and entering corners... plus all the race situations exist as well.. fuel load and tire wear....... its one of the only ganes which I could play for so long without getting bored of it... and p0weR... LFS has more than 30track configurations and about 20+cars as well

^^ You forgot one thing though. As similar as the two might seem LFS holds nothing against the GT series graphics wise. And let's be honest, that's what makes the series. Plus LFS concentrates a lot more on the simulation aspect and the online part. It's just not not designed to simulate leagues or to have the occasional race against the A.I.

As much as everyone praises GT for physics etc., you got to admit that you wouldn't be playing it, if it had below-average graphics. There are tons of GT like games out for the console but not a single one managed to capture the flair GT features. Forza might have come close but it's still somewhat "raw" compared to the smootheness of GT4.

When it comes to the PC I'm afraid you're boned. It seems to be either hardcore simulation or fun racers. You might want to check DTM Race Driver though. I heard good things about it.

I disagree - for me (and many others I'd guess) the GT series has always been about the physics - yes it looks pretty but I don't notice that when I'm playing it. It could have average graphics and it would still be just a good a game.

Okay, seems like there are different types of GT players out there. Still, i'm a little confused if you say that you like the game for the physics since it always seemed to me like Polyphony took a arcade-ish approch to every GT title. I might be a little of because I never drove a car myself. Still as far as I can judge they claim it to be the[/] driving simulator. Well, GTR, LFS and a lot more titles seem more realistic to me.

^ I've not played LFS or GTR, but I've played Forza, and have driven for over 14 years. The physics in the GT series are excellent - LFS may well be better, but that takes nothing away from GT.

You have played GT in Gran Turismo mode, not Arcade mode yes? (sorry if a stupid question)

Erm, that's a good one. I can't recall tbh. I only had GT3 and did the whole league, driver test thing there. I don't know if that's the Arcade mode. Thinking about it, it seems so.

I feel rather embarrassed now

^ When you say driver test thing you mean the bit where you get the different licenses (International A, B etc)? If so that's in Gran Turismo mode. In a lot of those tests the driver aids are on (you can't turn them off - grrrr) so that dumbs the physics down a bit - to get a good idea you need to get something powerful and quick and drive it with the aids off.

You should give GT4 a try - the physics are a whole step up from those in GT3 (which imho were pretty darn good to start with). AI on opponent cars still isn't great though.

Meanwhile, I really need to get around to trying LFS... I don't have a wheel though, perhaps if I got an adaptor for a ps2 controller...

If Forza is anything like GT4 I can't say it's realistic.
The game is clearly made so everyone could take a controller and have fun. You can take the most powerful racing car there, and be able to accelerate and stop in straight line. And not crash in the first corner. With all assists supposedly turned off. Yes, you can feel difference between cars, and probably it's the most realistic "arcade" racer ever, including all NFS's. But the goal wasn't to make it simulate real racing as closely as possible. More like realistic and yet so, that any 12 year old can do a lap on ring under 10 minutes with stupid pad controller (yeah, I don't like pad controllers). I still like the game, but for different reasons. It resembles reality just enough to make it enjoyable, makes you feel you're driving a car, but without biting your hand off.

You can't even compare it to LFS, it has totally different approach. The only thing important in LFS is simulation. Not graphics, not variety of cars, not tracks, not being able to please wide audience, only simulation. It's not a "GT4-like" game, you can't just take formula car on slicks and make a lap. I can guarantee you'll crash it on the first lap if you're new to LFS. It's appealing for some, and boring or frustrating for others. For me it's very rewarding when I finally can master the car and track and push it to the limit. And the best part is doing so online of course :)

word to that... it puts a smile on your face when you master that track/car combination after hours of testing and learning the track meter by meter getting to know every corner, where to brake, where to turn how, how much throttle and brake to give...... when you get all that right, it is really rewarding... even more rewarding when you have friends come over and say they are good in any racing game... so i just bring LFS out on my com and let them play any car on any track they want, if they take the F1 cars, they can't even get the car off the start line... cuz they just keep the throttle on full as they are used to it on GT4

there is this game called TOCA race driver or something like that. I heard that was pretty good.

Yeah I have TOCA Race Driver 2. Number 3 is coming out in February of 06. More realistic than the last one, which hopefully means the AI doesn't go full speed into a hairpin :censored:.

But yeah with LFS. It's just another league. The more I practice the better I get and the more rewarding it is. I'm only 4 seconds off the World Record for today's race and hopefully I can better. Just so much more rewarding. I remember in S1 when I used to keep up with ESPN. That was awesome. Such a thrill.

I played LFS. Well the demo at least. I feel that GTR is better though, but then again, I was playing the demo.
