The Audi Q7 will be on sale this coming spring in US. The LR3 has been three years old in its market. I am wondering which one is the best offroad king since. I have watched the Topgear Winter Olympics video clip last week, and the new Audi Q7 was tested in the beginning part with Volvo XC90. There is no question that the Audi Q7 is much better than XC90.However, what about LandRover LR3? How about Topgear makes a test between Q7 and LR3???

Anyway, before they do that, let us make our opinions here. Which one you think is the best offroad SUV--Q7 or LR3? And why?

are you sure you watched that olympic episode of top gear? i forgot which one but jeremy or james said that the Q7 was just another cayenne but with all of the offroad bits taken off. the Q7 is a crap car compared to the LR3

gotta be the LR3...

The LR3 has the advanced 4wd system with different modes for different surfaces and it also can simulate the rear wheels to have a non-independent suspension for more suspension travel and better traction off-road.

The Q7 should be better on road or around a track...but the LR3 should be miles better then the Q7.

I have just watched the video clip in 5mins ago, again. Indeed, James said what you mentioned above. However, I think Q7 still has its own characteristics. I wish either Topgear or Fifthgear make a test on them. Then, we will see what is really going on between each other.

its pretty obvious that the land rover is a better offroad SUV

I am on your side overall. In my point of view, LR3 may have better offroad ability on mud, rock, and sand. But, they both might have equivalent performance on grass, wet, and snow. I would like to buy a hybird version of LR3 if Landrover is going to release it soon. The fuel consumption of current model LR3 is just not desireble for me.

Note:LR3 does have its inherent problems, such as a bulit quality and engine issue. You may find out more information on this at www.edmunds.com consumer discussion and reviews.

Note: Audi Q7 looks more fashion and modern. This brand has less mechanical problems in its history(except elec. system). ..

there are very very very few car-based SUV's that can compete with a good truck-based SUV. one of those happens to the be the Cayenne/Touareg, even though the Q7 is based on the same platform, it is more road oriented.
the LR3 is much more a hard-core offroader, better than the RR in some aspects

woops...i meant to say that the LR3 should be miles better then the Q7 in off road (guess i left that part out  )

Yes, i have heard many problems with the new LR3...there were some cases where the air suspension failed too. The LR3 should be better then the Q7 on snow and ice also...car and driver did a test with the LR3 and they found that the intelegent diffs in the LR3 allows it to grip on the slippiest icy conditions when put on the correct settings. LR3 also has the groud clearance to get through thick and feets of snow.

So generaly...i think its like this. If you want an SUV thats like a car...the Q7 is a good choice (i dont think its ugly at all...i kinda like it). If you want off road performance...get the LR3.

Thanks for your reply.
What do you say about LR3 vs Toyota NEW Tundra (www.toyota.com). The new Tundra has a towing capability of 10000lbs. It also features a very good 4WD. Do you have any thought on that?
I know this question may seem pretty stupid. We cannot direct compare a truck and SUV basicly. But, let us just have a fun on the topic.

 I voted for the Q7 as the car I'd actually own. I missed the "Extreme Offroad" part

For the bush: Land Rover gets the thumbsup. For everything else, it'll have to be the Q7 - Audi build quality/value etc etc

LR3 all the way.

The Q7 is uglier than the Cayenne, it isn't designed for 4WD'ing. You'd think that Audi's ties with Porsche and VW (Touareg) AND the fact that they have done Quattro so well for so long, they'd desing it to rough and tumble stuff. (Yes, the Cayenne is actually pretty good off road, as is the Touareg).

The LR3 is more beautiful, more practical, not as overly huge and isn't butt-ugly either. Audi's done a botch job with the Q7, Land Rover have hit the nail on the head.

They are both butt ugyl, but at least the Landrover is useful and can do somethin off road.

The Discovery 3, easily. [Over here it's the third-gen Discovery, as opposed to the rather vague-sounding "LR3".]

It's one of the best-looking 4x4s around, in my opinion, all modern and ready to take anything. It's been designed as a 4x4 first, then with everything else in mind - whilst the Q7 is just designed to look ugly and take a family.

I'd have the Disco any day. It's not WhatCar's car of 2005 for nowt.

Land Rover Defender all the way - we're talking about going off road and not about having the great possibility of eventually driving on a muddy road in theory whilst doing the daily school run.

No those, who voted for the Q7, live in the centre of some big city and offroad for them is the parking lot and if it has got Rearview camera's it's perfect for their offroad experience.

Audi Q7 and Land Rover Discovery (I ain't stooping down to that heinous alphanumeric crap for us mindless suburbanites)? To badly paraphrase Pulp Fiction: "ain't the same ballpark, ain't the same league, ain't even the same fuckin' sport."

The Audi Q7 may have come from the company that gave us quattro, but the Discovery comes from the company that nearly defined off-roading for most of the last century. No contest.
