Australian Open 2010

I'm pretty sure Federer has made more money from winning grand slams than Hewitt has made through out his entire career.

Think again.

Federer has earned roughly $16-18 million from winning all the majors; around $1.000.000/Tournament.

Hewitt has earned over $18.000.000 in prize money alone during his career. Add sponsorship to that and you can pretty much double the amount he has earned, if not more.

Unlucky, Andy. Ah well, there will be plenty of more Open finals in your career.

Plus, your defeat leads me nicely to this : The Andy Murrayometer! Tells you how Scottish or how British he is each day, depending on what the papers are saying.

So :

"Andy Murray, the British tennis player, today reached the finals of the Open, the first Brit in 33 years to do so"
"Andy Murray, the Scottish tennis player, today lost in the finals to Federer, and admitted that his diet was 99% deep-fried haggis"

I'm talking prize money only, not sponsorships. 16 grand slams at just over 1,000,000 per major. Hewitt has earned 18,291,036 throughout his career in prizemoney. Federer won $1.85 million USD last night when he won the Australian open and the Australian open is known as having the lowest amount of prize money out of the four majors. It is highly likely that he has earned more than Hewitt just from winning grand slams.

EDIT: Federer would've had to earn $1,150,000 per grand slam win to pass Hewitts total. Fairly sure he would earn more than that per grand slam. ;)

Not entirely true, actually:

2009 Australian Open - $1.75 million USD for the winner (men's singles)
2009 US Open - $1.6 million USD.
2009 Wimbledon - $1.35 million USD.
2009 Roland Garros - $1.35 million USD.

It's quite clear to see the Australian Open actually has the biggest pot for the winner, not the smallest as you claim.

And there is one thing you forgot: the amount of price money has taken a drastic rise in the recent years.

For example here is the prize money for the men's singles champion from 2003 onwards (the year Federer won his first title at SW19)

2003 - 915.000 USD
2004 - 960.000 USD
2005 - 1.000.000 USD
2006 - 1.045.000 USD
2007 - 1.115.000 USD
2008 - 1.195.000 USD
2009 - 1.355.000 USD

Federer won all of those save it for 2008. On average he has colleceted 1.065.000 USD from winning each Wimbledon title.

Same thing for each tournament, for example The US Open had 1.500.000 USD for the winner in 2008; a year later it was 1.600.000 USD. In 2006 it was "only" 1.200.000 USD.

I am nitpicking I know, but I am bored out of my mind :|
