Awesome Thread... [Automotive Edition]

Same engine as in last year's Scirocco. 2.5l 5 cyl turbo.

This one is a 2.5, but the Sciroccos had only a 2-liter (or 1.8) engine as far as I know, the Golfs are in SP8T and the Sciroccos were only in SP3T when petrol-fuelled... did they go for a larger engine in the CNG-powered cars?

[964 on a inflatable raft]
He must certainly value his 964 Carrera Cabriolet very highly. Looking more closely at it, I see it's got the 964 Turbo's flared arches, so it might be the '93 model "30 jahre 911" special edition.

On a side note, 964-model 911s (Turbo and Carrera RS in particular) have appreciated very recently though. Just five years ago a 964 Turbo was worth less than half of what they change hands for now. They're actually more expensive than both 996- and 993-model Turbos.

Except one thing, whats with this new naming system. At the very end, "CL63 AMG with 5.5L V8". Wouldn't that make it a CL55 AMG? Or am I missing something. I can kind of see why they would do this for the lesser models (them and BMW), but the high end performance once? Common!

Well, the GL500 has 5.5 litres, too, but it doesn't have twin turbos so it develops "just" 388 hp, whereas the CL63 AMG develops 544/571 hp (without/with Performance Package). The numbering is not about the engine displacement but mainly about the power it delivers.

In normal models it's been weird for years, but at least in the performance models they should stick to the numbers. But even the "63" models were wrong, the engine is 6.2. Sorry if somebody is in marketing, but sometimes I just hate the stuff they make up. "Hey, let's use 6.3 because it has historical connection, nobody cares about 0.1l!" and then later "Hey, it might be 5.5 but we had 6.2, which was called 63, before, so the new model, even with twin turbos, can't sound worse than before! It has to be 63!".

If I were an engineer working with these geniuses, I'd really need my 500+ bhp to cool me down. And don't let me start with the BMW Z4 sDrive35iS stuff, that naming really doesn't belong to awesome thread, quite the opposite.

It used to be about displacement. Remember the old 340hp E50 AMG which actually had a 5.0li v8, which became the 350hp E55 when Merc changed over to their 5.5li 3-valve design. When they added a supercharger it was still called the E55, but then it had 460+hp.
Also the first SLK55 was sold with a 5.5li NA V8 pushing 350+hp, right alongside the SL55 which had the same 5.5li only with a supercharger and pushing close to 500hp.

Merc just doesn't want to go backwards with their numbering.
