BBC under pressure to sack Jeremy Clarkson over N-word claims

Why does every single "I am losing my priviliges to go around insulting people" semi-racist conservative idiot on the internet post in this thread? I've handed out more -rep in the thread than in all of 2014 before.

Anyway, it was an old nursery rhyme. Jeremy should have done without it, it was stupid, the word is horrible, but it wasn't aired, it was an intentionally leaked outtake and from this point it should have been viewed. He should say "sorry", take care not co cock-up again, BBC might have given him a fine, but that should have been all. Not that huge affair.

Whilst it was an "outtake", it wasn't done in private. It was done in front of a camera crew, sound technicians, make-up people, a director, a key grip and a best boy. I suspect that the airing of the "slope" "joke" has led one of these witnesses to outing this example of casual racism. It is interesting that Ofcom are now looking into the "slope" comment again. I personally think this was way worse than the current infraction, as it was aired and unambiguous.

I think free speech is a cornerstone of democracy. I also think that free speech should not be free from scrutiny. These dick-heads seem to want one way "free speech". They want to be able to be racist (or make a cute racial slur for the entertainment of morons), but they don't want others to have the right to call them on it.

I am neither offended nor annoyed by his comments about Americans. I watch the show to be entertained and I believe that it has such a huge following because it is simply that; entertaining. There are countless shows for those who want everything to be politically correct. Every aspect of the entertainment industry thrives or fails based on the support of its audience. If enough people are turned off by an entertainer to tune out, then the enterprise fails. This is no different. Let's see how many people are offended enough to stop following the show. It is the fairest way to let the majority rule. Otherwise, we are always pandering to the loudest critics regardless of how small their numbers may be.

Taking the piss out of each other is an age-old tradition in the Anglosphere. It means you're one of the countries that we consider to be cool.

If we don't make fun of you, it's probably because you suck and we don't want to talk to you.

Just having different opinion doesn't give anyone a privilege to call somebody else an idiot or racist, the world isn't black-and-white, it's full of colours (although many people wish so). This is exactly what I was on about.

Have you experienced racism in your life? I don't think so. But I have.

Not replying by rep, it is childish.

There's no doubt about that: despite the term wasn't that known among (especially foreign) audience, the "slope" thing is much worse than a leaked outtake.

Absolutely no doubt about having to care about what one is saying or how, it's what you look like, it's similar to brushing teeth, washing etc.

But I wasn't talking about that. Maybe it's my poor English but I think I wasn't understood. I was talking about the power of calling anybody racist or whatever. About it liked to be used to dehonest the opponent or instead of arguments. Not in Jeremy's case, of course, as I said, he made a mistake. As I said above, I have experienced that.

Jeremy Clarkson given final warning by the BBC.

Well, I don't know. Anything the man seems to say offends somebody.

He has insulted me, he has insulted the people I live around, he has insulted my state and my country and I still love the man because I understand Jeremy and besides, I don't think anyone could really offend me because I know who I am.

Couldn't agree with you more. I am black (white belgian father and black brazilian mother), I have been racially insulted a number of times but I never got really offended by racial remarks or insults. Like you said, if you really know who you are, it becomes harder for such things to offend you.
As for Clarkson, also like you said, he has probably insulted in some level all kinds of people, places, everything. I know Clarkson from Season 1 and it somehow has never really got to me. To me, when it comes to black people (and yellow and blue and green), if anything, Clarkson is one of the celebrities I know
who shows the less prejudice while actually interacting with different people.
The thing is, when you've got a machine gun for a mouth, this is bound to happen, and it did...and the BBC knew this was a possibility from the start.

It can get worse (and it did).

Imagine you are an employer and want to fill a vacant post. More candidates have appeared and from them you considered one to be the best. Unfortunately it is a white heterosexual man who does not publicly express his religion and political opinions. You ...! If any of the others is a woman or a member of any ethnical, religious or sexual minority (or just has different political opinion than you), you are not allowed to hire your favorite candidate. At least if you want to avoid public dehonestation, racism or sexism accusation etc.

Unfortunately, when it seemed that open racism has finally disappeared, the PC policy is starting to build a new wave. It is similar to eco-politics or EU-socialism which start to resemble 1984. Orwell was right, just missed it for about two decades. If you have a different opinion, you commited a thougt-crime and deserve to be strongly accused and dehonested. This is what is wrong, it's just another form of totalitarianism which doesn't help anyone and just makes life more difficult for the disadvantaged whom it was supposed to help.

Anyway, it was an old nursery rhyme. I think the biggest problem with this whole mess is other groups telling me how I should feel about what he supposedly did. To the point of writing Obama about it??????

I will make my own mind up. Like one of the Baldwin brothers stated if Bush was reelected he was leaving the country. Well he was but the bastard is still here, but he will never as long as I live see a dime of my money and by the looks of his career since, others think like me. You are allowed to think and believe what you like, but when you put it out in public, then it i my decision if I am happy with you or not.

My dad would probably have been considered the biggest racist of the world. But he grew up with black people all around him. You had to go to town to see white people really. Maybe a few at church but mostly black because they were a share cropping family back in the deep swamps of Louisiana. His playmates were black Emma and yellow Rose. He visited them even after they were in a nursing home until they died.

While I was growning up, his two best friends were Leto and Wetback (Frank). Leto was the biggest black man I have ever seen. Think Mandingo or something. Wetback was an illegal that had arrived in the US after swimming the Rio Grande River. When the illegal amnesty was offered, it was my dad who made sure Frank had everything he needed to apply and stayed on top of the people making sure he was moving thru the process because Frank did not own a phone or a car. When Frank had a stroke, my dad put me on the case to locate his relatives in Texas. It took nine months but I located a sister and my dad loaded Wetback up in his van and took him to his family in Texas because they were not in a position to come get him.

In my family if something was only half done, it was nigger rigged. That was just what it was. It had nothing to do with the black man at all in our eyes.

I have always thought actions speak louder than words, and in the case of my dad, by word, he would now be branded a racist, but by deed, he couldn't care less what a man's race or status was.

So what it comes down to is, I don't care what Jeremy says, it is his deeds that make him a racist or not and as far as I can tell he is not a racist.

Yep, classy move Skylock, just use the N-word once again just to prove how superior you are to the PC brigade. Very mature.

Some people just aren't happy unless they're unhappy. Unfortunately for Clarkson he has a reputation for being less than politically correct so that makes him an easy target (or perhaps just easy justification) for people looking to make themselves feel better by ruining things for others. Political correctness is going to be the downfall of our society. It's to the point now that if even just one person vaguely expresses offense over something than the alleged action/phrase/image/etc. is now taken away from everybody to keep from possibly offending someone else. Well guess what? We live in a very crowded world and not everyone will agree with everyone else all the time. Fucking get over it! Life isn't like one of those school sports days where everyone gets a medal. There are winners and losers at all levels. Concentrate on the things that you have control of and you'll live a much happier life.

As an American, I find myself in Clarkson's crosshairs very frequently. He constantly says that we're all fat and carry guns while making babies with our relatives and/or vegetables while driving cars that can only go in straight lines. Want to know my reaction to those constant jokes? I laugh. I know that he's making the jokes only because he respects us enough to point out our flaws through comedy. His personality is one of the biggest things that drew me to the show (and, in turn, this forum). Frankly, I'd be offended if he didn't offend me.

I completely agree with your last phrase in particular, in all regards.

I don't know if anyone posted something like this cos I didnt catch the thread when this started, but ...

Anyway, yeah, overblown stupid piece of crap sensationalist "journalism"

Look, I think we can all agree that segregating certain words to people of certain ethnic backgrounds will stop racism forever... Oh, wait, that's really fucking stupid...

I think we can all agree JC is a blithering oaf with a staggering degree of incompetence with regards public image and general 'giving a shit', hence why he is much loved. Yeah, this was a pretty dumb move as far as PR goes, but in the grand scheme of things it is so far from being news worthy and so far from being offensive it's untrue. It was a quote from a children's song to start with, and he didn't actually say the word in question.

This whole fucking issue pisses me off to no end and being to light two things:

A - Making the N-word a "blacks only"* word is probably enforcing more racism than anything else.
B - You don't even have to say the word, just simply hint at is existence to cause issue/offence.

The whole world needs to take a step back and realise that words do not always mean the same thing. It's like when an English person moves to Scotland and is really shocked when they get called a "cunt" as part of a jovial greeting. The meaning of the word in certain social situations no longer has any relation to it's historical definition, I live in an area where a little old lady will call you a "cunt" in the same way you might call somebody "silly", "och, ye daft wee cunt". In either case the insult has become multi-gendered anyway, it no longer refers only to women. Language changes, both over time and over geographical distance.

For example I just learned that the word "moron" can be considered offensive, yet I hear it all the time on TV and radio and nobody gives a solitary shit. Originally coming from a Greek word meaning "foolish", then becoming a medical term for somebody with "mild retardation" and now meaning somebody "stupid"... I'd wager that few people know it's historical usage at this point, so is the word still offensive? Potentially it could be, if used in the right context, but most likely not.

For as long as the "n-word" remains segregated there is no chance of it ever ceasing to be a racist word that causes aggravation and anger. Language as a whole relies on CONTEXT to work, but context is completely ignored when dealing with the N-word. It strikes me as being really, really backwards when a white guy saying "what up my nigga" is considered just as racist and insensitive as saying "fucking filthy niggers" and that the racism is vastly reduced in BOTH cases if the speaker was black. What if the person had no idea of the history of the word? If their only knowledge of it was as "something rappers call their pals", is it still racist if no racism is present in it's usage?!?

This whole "word claiming" thing as a whole stinks of fucking bullshit anyways, the ridiculous "social justice" movement on Tumblr is big on this. "Oooh, can't use the word retarded 'cause mentally disabled people", "Oooh, can't call somebody ginger 'cause discrimination", "Ooooh, can't call somebody dumb 'cause mute people". Fuck off. Load of self absorbed nonsense. It's worthless anyway because the world will just find new words to offend you. It is SO fucking redundant. Just the fact that this thread has pages and pages of discussion about a fat, white guy saying a word while there are actual problems of racism out there. Like people getting killed because of the colour of their skin, people not being able to get a proper education or a place of employment in the Western "developed" world and yet there is all this contention about a jumble of fucking letters in a particular order***.

In related "news".

Oops, played a song with a bad word in it, don't want to remind people that shit happened. It's almost like saying "oh, no we never did that, us whiteys never did anything bad, let's just forget it ever happened". No doubt the use in the song is pretty racist, implying black people are black cause they are constantly sun burnt, but banning the song isn't going to have stopped it from existing.

Y'know, I don't want to whitewash the word "nigger" out of existence, I don't want to segregate it or set it aside as a "special word" to be used with care. I want, in the future, perhaps 100 years from now, (provided we aren't all dead by that point) for it to be just a word with some innocuous meaning. Perhaps somebody looks it up in the dictionary one day and is like "hey, nigger used be a derogatory term for black people, that's fucking weird" and their mate will be like "man, people were just a bunch of Belgians back then".**

* Probably should say "blacks", but I don't know the PC term. "African American", not if you ain't American. "Coloured", everybody is coloured for fucks sake. "Negro", nope.

** Because we'll always find somebody to pick on, and why not the Belgians, with their pissing infant mascot, fucking Belgians...

*** I'm just as guilty writing this long ass post.

**** I stopped using the term "N-Word" halfway through typing this 'cause I realised it changes nothing, it's like typing "n*igger". You know what it means, it's still there. It's like when people in the Harry Potter books realised "Voldemort" and "You-Know-Who" were exactly the same thing and they all looked kind of silly.

TL;DR, I'm a racist. DAILY MAIL 4 LYFE. VOTE UKIP.

me neither, it was only mentioned she was seriously ill (cancer)...

I see the Mirror is trying to cause more trouble... So what if Clarkson sold these, it was some 30+ years ago, leave it in the past! The fact that their only source for this is Clarkson's first ex-wife doesn't help. Rest of the article is just rehashes the news already out there...

I feel, to a point, that this whole issue has been blown completely out of proportion. I watched the video and I still didn't hear whether or not he said the n-word. Even IF he had said the word it still shouldn't have caused this much trouble. I agree with others here in that the context in which the word was used should determine whether he is being racist or not.

Clarkson's mother
I had to look this up after seeing it mentioned. She died March 24th this year at the grand old age of 79. Only found one reference to it.

Don?t you just love how the article implies so much, while actually giving so little facts and how they carefully make sure you can?t really tell wich Clarkson said what, when ...

At first, I thought the article was a comic piece. A bit of satire, especially with the photos that punctuate it. But, I think it is meant to be a serious piece, which makes it even funnier.

Did his parents really call someone a "muesli-shoed do-gooder"?
