Best wheel???

Buba said:
I had already a great time in GTR... In LFS however I have to relearn everything.... I only could do 1:41 laps so far... I've done 1:37:9 with the joypad... WTF 8)
You didn't instantly expect better times now did you?
It'll take a little bit before you can get down to your personal best times.

I have a MOMO. I thought it was basically indestructable until one of the gear paddles stopped working. I always tried to be gentle with it too, but some of my buddies were a bit rougher when I let them try it out. Now, I just use an Xbox controller with a USB adaptor. The wheel is cooler as far as the fun factor, but I can pull faster laps with the Xbox controller because it's easier and quicker to counter-steer with an anolog stick. Just a flick of the thumb.

I also found that I had more desk space after switching to the controller, so that was another bonus. The wheel is cool and all, don't get me wrong, it has that special feel to it, but I do like the controller better. Plus, I can chill back in my recliner and have a go, but I haven't tried mounting my wheel on a lazyboy.

Hmm, I don't think an Xbox Controller is any better than a PS2 device... Just equal...

But my wheel has payed off, since I made a new personal best of 1:37:8 today... And suddenly I see there are more faults to get rid of.... I'll be at a 1:36 something time next week...

Some games just don't work using the wheel... World racing is way better controlable with my joypad i.e. ...

I never said the Xbox controller was better than a PS2 device, but now that you mention it, I think it is. Why? Becasue Xbox controllers have the pressure sensitive triggers underneath which make great throttle and brake controls. PS2 controls don't have this, atleast last time I checked. But the PS2 controls are good too.

All the buttons on a PS2 controller are pressure sensitive, so they do act sort of like the triggers on the XBox controller. The only problem is that a PS2 button needs to be pushed only a few millimeters to fully compress it where the XBox controller has more travel and more feel. In terms of console triggers, the GameCube and Dreamcast triggers are both superior to the XBox though.

Hey Buba, does the wheel support seperate axes for the gas and brake pedals?

Yep, you can configure it, if you want it to be separated or combined, I think...

On a PS2 controller, I use the right stick to accelerate and the left for steering... But you have to get used to that, I admit..
And actually you really never said anything about the PS2 controller being worse... I guess I made it up. Was drunk last night  :p

Haven't tried those, do they work on a PC too? I decided to go with the Xbox controller cause I like the triggers and the USB adaptor was only about $5 US.

I guess, there is the right controller for every game... Just to settle this.

And there are adaptors for all the console controls to the PC... Been using one for Playstation since Tony Hawk 2 on PC...

^ Ya, exactly. I know a GameCube to PC adapter would b easy to find, but I'm not sure about the Dreamcast. They definitely made them at one point in time but finding one right now may be hard.

I really think, I should get a wheel, not only for this game... Any advice?

If you're looking for THE best wheel get BRD Speed 7 wheel and Speed 7 pedals
http://www.interactiveracing.com/Steering_Wheels/Speed7/
http://www.interactiveracing.com/Pedals/Speed7/

The drawback is, the top of the line model versions cost .....

....... 900 pounds for the wheel and 250 pounds for the pedals!
(thats 1680USD/1306EUR and 480USD/400 EUR)

If that's too much... :p , then MOMO or Driving Force Pro - I'm going to get that one soon :)

I'm going to get that Speed 7 combo, it just wont be any time soon.....

I have heard of those... But I don't think that the wheel will be that much better than a momo or driving force pro... And yeah, the pedals have a clutch, but as long as games don't need a clutch for you to go faster, there is just no need for that shit...
Though, a clutch would be nice...
Buba

Like GTR and LFS, they have clutches. I think those are two of the greatest racing simulators out there right now.

I WANT them. They look awesome and most likely perform very well.

well, for under under $150 dollars US, the best wheel you can get is the Driving Force Pro. With the new drivers, you can change the lock anywhere from 40? to 900?. I have a 2nd wheel (old driving force) plugged in and i use the pedal as a clutch pedal.
Now all i need is an actuall 5 or 6 speed shifter, but the sequential one on the dfp is working just fine. :)

You might consider the actlabs shifter... But maybe NFS most wanted will feature the M5... 7speed gb... On the other side, it will still be arcadeish and probalby play better with a Pad...

Buba

^^ I know, but some will be on ebay, I guess...
