BMW Alpina B5

The M5 for the guy who wants a real automatic.

big deal... so alpina took a 545i and supercharged it! I can do that in my garage... the new M5 is a much better car because it's the same power but NA...

I think it took them a while to put the supercharger into the 4.4l V8 because of the valvetronic, just remember how late the B7 came out ;) . The company officals also claimed that the B5 is faster than the M5. The Alpina models of the old 5series were a lot slower than the old M5, so this is really an improvement. Not to forget that an Alpina is a kind of cruiser, not a four door sports car, at least in terms of ride comfort.

Why is NA better? :?

I think there's a tad bit more to it than just sticking a supercharger in...

the M5 is more technological, more engineered, and better as a whole package

But the M5 dosent' have the ultra smooth power and torque curves as the Alpina "The Alpina?s 493 hp are available from 5500 rpm until redline at 6000 rpm. Coupled with 516 lb-ft from 4250 to 5250 rpm" But the M5 is better as a whole package, you're right. The M6 does just fine, though.

because turbocharged is forced, and not only the air, everything is under lots of pressure which shows in a not so smooth engine, which'll break much faster
+ you always have the same power, with a turbo it depends of altitude, humidity, temperature, ...

BMWcar brings a comparative between the B5 and the M5. Haven't opened the magazine, though, and wouldn't buy it just for that and the history of M5. :bmwpoo:

I think I may be the one who used that smilie more times. :>

I'm sorry - but there is no way in hell I'm going to believe that any supercharged car is smoother then an NA car...

NA cars are instant power... forced induction cars must build their boost...

You're right on turbo cars, not on supercharged ones...

Just that little more distinguished then a M5.

Not everything has a huge turbo like an STI. <_< My car is buttery smooth, but we're talking about a supercharged engine, not a turbo. Supercharged engines often have flatter torque curves than NA engines. And NA engines suffer at high altitude as well, often more than a forced induction motor. And if the engine is designed for FI from the get go it can usually handle it no problem.

Also with today's engines, FI doesn't mean shorter life spans like it used to, assuming it's a SOHC or DOHC. I don't know how OHV engines cope with FI tbh. :)
