If anyone was on the A34 outside Oxford today, they may have been forgiven for thinking they were on a streach of Autobahn. Because there was not one but two M5?s there, driving in formation. Both in similar colour, both fine examples of the old and the new. An E34 M5 and a new E60 M5. They both belong to the same guy* And I was allowed to drive the E34 M5. He, obviously, wouldn?t let me drive the E60. But still, who cares, because the E34 was FANTASTIC. It?s an M5, and any M5 is great. IT?S AN M5. It was just really cool to have two M5?s driving two a breast along a stretch of dual carriageway. Only changing lanes to overtake lesser cars. The people we past must have gone, ?oh look there's an M5, oh hang on there's two!? It?s a unique sight. It was just great. M5 on M5. Eventually, we had to pull over at a service station, as the petrol seemed to run out quite quickly. There, I had to let the guy who brought the car up take over. But, it was just so great, may be it was the caffeine in the Red Bull I had at the service station, but just seeing the M5?s parked there together was just so awesome. They are both such beautiful cars and the E34 held it?s own against it?s younger brother rather well, even with me driving it. It was quite amazing the looks people gave the cars parked there. I don?t know how many people actually realise what an M5 is, but I guess there's just something, even someone who knows nothing about cars can see, especially the E60 with those chrome side air intakes. Apparently the guys had a more ?full on? race last night when they brought them down, when the roads were empty. And managed to scare themselves a few times by going a bit too fast. It was much more of a light cruise on the M4 home. But, still was cool as we went two a breast again, where we could. It was just so cool. I just wish we?d had a 3rd M5 so we could have filmed it, cos it would have looked great. Still, it is something I will never forget.

Do I still want an M5?..........OH YEA, MORE THAN EVER! :)

*Before anyone says it, I am not interested in the guy who has them, he?s taken, and lives too far away, and as they both belong to his company, they are probably not his anyway. To rude to ask.

Nice, any pics or vids?

Duh, I just said "it would have been nice too", I was driving, I didn't even know the E60 M5 was coming and I thought I'd only get to drive the E34 about 100 yards round the car park at 10mph or something, didn't think they'd let me take it on the road. I WISH I DID cos it would have made some excellent pictures, one of the guys took some of them parked with his mobile phone so I'll post them when I get them.

Cool the new BMW's are the closest thing to a real KITT you can get especailly the 7 range they have more computers in them than the Starship Enterprise and the M cars have the M button that reminds me of the turbo boost in Knight Rider.

Re: BMW M5

Congrats, TGG! Classic BMWs rock, especially M5s. We demand photographic evidence, of course.

I got to sit in a new M5 at the Rolex Vintage Festival. I can't judge much, since I didn't get to drive it or ride in it. But one mildly amusing situation arose between a couple whose husband owned an E39 520i (or something):

Wife: What do these paddles do?
Husband: They help you shift faster.
Wife: But isn't that more complicated than usual?
Husband: Nope, the one on the right is for upshifting, and the one on the left is for downshifting.
Wife: But I still don't see the point.
Me: It's so you can pull off a sub-8 minute lap at the Nurburgring.
Couple: True dat d0gg! (or words to that effect.)

I also learned that there is no possible way for somebody who has no experiences with Lotuses to enter an Elise gracefully. I banged my elbow, bruised my knee, and hit my head on the roof that was in place a few times. I still want one, though. It only makes the experience cooler.

And that's a problem for many, including me. But that's another topic for another time...

It's on topic the title of thread is BMW M5, so anything to do with the M5 is on-topic. The computer systems and I-Drive is not as bad as some people make out, OK old people tend to have problems with it. Ooooh it's got too many buttons. But then they can't even work a mobile phone without making a drama of it. It's all quite simple, once your used to it. I've messed about with I-Drive and it seems fairly striaght forward. And on the M5 the only button you need is the M and thats easy to find and press!

I still don't think you should need to press *any* button to get the max power of the engine - I mean sure have a button to put the suspension, tc, throttle etc into max-attack mode (and buttons don't get much sexier than the 'M' button), but dammit I want full power on startup!

Thats true, the old M5 is just that on start up. But they guy with the E60 M5 did say that the M button made it a bit safer in his opinion, because for most of the time you don't use it and it's still a fast car. But you're limiting it's total power so you can kind of keep yourself under control and stop yourself from going mad. Unless you press it that is.

It's also more efficient for commuting to work, especially in today's age of $3 gas. The good thing is that it's still fast, and you can make it even faster for those windy mountain roads or track days or smoking ricers.

Post your legs in under the steering wheel first then lower you butt into the seat using the sill and the side of the seat as leverage. Getting out is harder IMO :p

If I can afford an M5 I'm not really worried about using an extra 5% or so (I just made that figure up) more fuel, and the TC in default mode is still going to prevent wheelspin. So to me limiting the power like that is just crazy and pointless.

Yea they burned a lot of fuel up quite quickly, it think we were getting something like 8-12mpg. You can get more if drive properly. Apparntly with the button if you want to go faster you don't need to do anything else, like change down, etc just press the button. Very James Bond.

?oh look there's an M5, oh hang on there's two!?

That is exactly what I would have said...and that would have been it. :p

Still a nice car. I think you would have just exploded when you saw them.

as they both belong to his company

What is wrong with that? It is the smart thing to do if you know anything about taxation and accounting. I'm my mind you are insane if you buy actually buy a "prestige" car.

You should arrange to meet up with someone else whose got a Continental GT and do the same, two GTs racing each other, trust me it would be worth it, great experience.

AAHHRRRGGGG!!! Its useless wifout pics!!

Anyway, I dont like the M5 much. Its ugly, sounds like a diesel and there isnt even that much torque on tap when u need it. Also, I just DO NOT get the point of the "M" button :?

Yeh I KNOW. But if you owned one, are you gonna be putting your foot to the floor WITH the M button engaged in the city streets? I think not! Most of the time, its gonna be a 400BHP diesel sounding thing whereas (you know where im going with this...) an AMG gets that deep throaty supercharged groal all the time and especially at start up.

Despite the fanboy overtones - you've got a good point.

Well thats what I said the guy whos got said, he don't use the M button all the time. Well sounds also are, in part, due to the exhasut system, I mean you could have a crappy car that sounded like an AMG with thr right exhaust, in fact, in the UK it's a bit of a craze, a stupid one IMHO, but you see people with small 1.0L cars and they have exhausts that make them sound like there packing a V8. They think it's cool, of course any serious petrolhead just laughs.

I don't think so, its kind of hard to replicate a sound of an AMG Merc with a 1.0l engine and an exhuast system. You would get a high-pitched whine, and even if you found a low-down sounding exhaust system, it still wouldn't sound like a Merc.
