I'm just a college student...but due to some reasons, my family want me to have a very safe SUV to drive..because Nashville, TN has a very high DUI driving rate..and so isn't very safe. As a result..I was landed the BMW X3 3.0i 2004 model...and my dad allowed me to have anything on it..so it has premium and sports pack...

I just really want to discuss about this SAV...it isn't as bad as Jeremy Clarkson says in August 5th 2004 episode. Yes, I can forsee the X3 as not very off-road friendly (I never drove it offroad)...but it really is a good SAV. It is like a slimmed down version of the X5, but with a lot of power. It might not corner as fast as a M3, but it's really good for a SAV...and you can really make it run real fast...it also has a good trunk space and moving in/out dorms require very little trips.

I'm pretty sure not many ppl have driven the X3. Yes, with the sports pack, the ride isn't comfortable, hence, it's very very tough, but I'm young, and so are my friends...we don't really need a very comfortable SAV...

All in all, the X3 is underrated by Jeremy. I see his point, and indeed the interior and styling are questionable..but it's still a very fast performance SAV. (Yes i know the Cayenne owns the performance SAV sector..)

Feel free to post your opinions and thoughts.

I'm no Bimmer fan but I know they have their benefits like good ride quality for instance. The X3 has been said to drive like a saloon but thats probly cos it isnt really a 4X4...Obviously I am against its styling but seeing as your from America, your young and your parents wanted you to have a safe SUV, why wouldnt you go for the sportier, safer and overall better Lexus RX300/330? I hear its a best seller in its class in the USA.

btw whats a SAV? :?

Sports Activity Vehicle

And the RX330 isn't sportier than the X3...

It's ugly as fuck...

atleast the X5 is bulky.. but the X3 looks like a SUV for stupid blondes with no job and a rich husband who go do the shops in town and bring back loads of expensive shit, and they like it cause it's easy to step into it.

Sorry mate, I just really don't like that SUV (although being a SUV is already a bad start) but if you're happy with it it's fine! :)

I'd understand your pain though if you were a real car enthusiast, which you don't seem to be or you would have explained to your parents their stupidity and they'd let you buy a safe car.

a X3 !!!!!
is this really your first car ? :?
my first car must be at least 10 times cheaper than this one...

Any pics ?

sorry I go to a college where BMW 3series (coupe, cabriolet, saloon) and Mustangs are common things. Throw in an occasional Porsche Turbo and my BMW X3 is not very outstanding. Well that's not the point realy. I'm NOT from America either..I'm Chinese, from Hong Kong, just studying there...that's why parents want me to have a safe car that is rather "low profile" (yeah BMW is low profile my ass..my dad has some weird theory) and can move in/out of dorms easily (hence SUV).

I'm not a big big petrol head..but if I can choose (skip the move in/out bit), I'd like the new VW Golf GTI. Other fav cars include the RX-8, RX-7FD (heard there's a new RX-7 coming out), Audi RS4 B5...etc. SAV is only for America. Back in HK, more agile cars like the VW Golf GTI is much more practical and suitable for the windy, narrow road conditions.

All in all, X3 is not very suitable for a student like me, and I do agree that the X3 can easily be pictured with dumb blondes, but the X3 will with me for another 2 years, and I'm more than happy about that.

Btw, it's not realy my car, my parents bought it for me...so it isn't my own money. I technicaly, don't have my own car yet. (yes, though the X3's owner title has only my name on it)

I think you can still have plenty of fun with it.

BTW, glad to see another "tipical" HK way of writing. Guess it is acceptable where you come from...

Hmmm ok so you've got some taste in cars, and being asian, it explains why you didn't argue with your parents.

So I'm sorry if I've been harsh dude, enjoy your car! well.. SUV..

nono it's ok, dude, I'm totally cool. It's just that I was too stupefied by the fact that my parents are going to get me such a great car. It is practical, and useful and so I didn't say anything, that's why.

Any other X3 owners around here?

I learned to drive on a Jeep Wrangler and after that bought a cheap truck. I'll never drive a truck/SUV ever again. I'd try and make a case for the VW Golf GTI as it's cheaper and very safe even in a collision with a SUV.

My mom owns one and i've driven it around a bunch, no sports package... But, I just don't think it is worth the money. It isn't a very pretty car first off even with it's nice BMW logo which does improve its value. It does drive well, just as BMW should; smooth on the highway and stable around corners.

But, what is the purpose of an SUV or SAV as its being called? Certainly not for driving town with all your buddies and what not, that is what a saloon or compact car is for. If you don't need all wheel drive or a bunch of un-used space because it is higher off the ground or if you don't own a boat, buy a wagon, a saloon, anything but an overpriced luxery SAV or SUV, whatever...

My mother wants to buy one.

*cough* im just pointing out that stereotyping cultures isnt cool*cough*

*cough* if you cant agree with me* *cough*ban me then*cough*

*cough* :D *cough*

ps: *cough*this is fun*cough*

*cough*when the fuck did we get so lame*cough*

I don't mind about ppl talking about stereotypical asian culture. (note the word stereotypical, so in many cases, it's not stereotypical).

Anyhow, back to the X3, you have a very good point about buying an estate version of cars instead. If sth went wrong with my X3, or if I can rewind in time to buy a car for college again, it'd be the Audi RS4 B5 (estate version). That would rock. But again, when my parents bought the X3 for me, I wasn't that interested into cars at that time, hence I've only got my driving licence for less than a year.

X3 is overly priced, but now BMW has lowered it. For ultimate fun with the X3, sports and premium package are necessary. The full panorama rooftop is awesome (makes the cabin feel good all the time) and the sports pack gives you some very seriously good handling and acceleration for a SAV, but women rarely floors the throttle...so that's pointless..
