Board Games - Any FinalGear people playing?

I thought about making a board game thread to recommend other people good board games you played.

So I go first ;). My friends and me do a board game evening once in a while and have quite a big collection by now, besides the "normal" stuff like Monopoly. It is much easier when you have ~8 people always getting games together, much less expensive ;)

The game most people love is Battlestar Galactica. It is basically a really nice version of the TV show. You play onboard the Galactica and Colonial One (and Pegasus in the expansion). In the beginning, you pick a character and get a "identiy car" (Cylon or Human). Midterm in the game you get another card, but once Cylon always Cylon. You can have to pass situations by reaching a number of cards of a certain type, where other types count negative, so you basically can sabotage but have to be sneaky to draw attention to other people. Basically, it is a game about deceiving and lying, which is probably why we like it so much, especially some girls are master deceivers :D. To be honest, the game gains A LOT with the Pegasus expansion (Pegasus Battlestar, new badass characters, cylon leaders, executions...), if you want to play it, get both ;). Works for up to 7 players with expansion, and the more players the better the game becomes!

and one image from a "humans you are fucked now" situation (base stars are 3d plastic in expansion) ;)

Another game we play sometimes is Talisman with the Reaper and Dungeon expansion. Not that much to say about it, you basically walk around, level up, beat the shit out of other players, avoid meeting death and try to get to crown first. Lots of dice luck involved thouh ;). However, depending on players, it can take a long time and produce some hilarious situation (when a monk beats the shit out of a troll f.e.). The more people you have, the slower it gets and that is quite a downside. Optimum playercount 4 imho. Oh, and you might want to have a quite big table for it :)

Another game in our collection is Starcraft (with Brood Wars expansion).
Well, it is a strategy game and really nicely made. You start with a race and planets and upgrade etc...basically like the PC game, however the fighting is a bit strange, if you have the right cards you can manage to get one Marine take down a carrier etc....material is nice and it takes looooooooooooong to finish. As well, a lot of space is needed. Example pic is from a 4 player round without expansion ;)

For quick games without lots of material we have "Die Kutschfahrt zur Teufelsburg" (looks like it is available with English material under the same name). Two teams (who don't know their teammates) battle it out for items. One team has to get 3 keys, the other one 3 grails. You attack other people to try to find out their identity or steal items, you can swap items etc.. You need to be quite awake to remember everything in this game and make conclusions from how others play...quite a nice, cheap game and easily explained :)

Quite sth else is Anti-Monopoly, basically Monopoly where you decide to play a monopolist (normal Monopoly rules for you) or an free enterprise...where you can build houses as soon as you have 1 street but earn less...quite funny :)

Other games for more players we frequently play are
Uno (which always ends in havoc and gets more fun the more drunk people are)
Cranium http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/891/cranium
Nobody is perfect http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/8829/nobody-is-perfect
Activity
Bang! (with some extensions) http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgameexpansion/30933/bang-the-bullet

So, what do you play :p

Risk, pretty old but still fun to beat the crap out of family members :D

Clue, I'm pretty good at this, because I think logically.

risk

(i guess everyone knows this one?)

demarrage
demarrage2.jpg

it's an awesome game! it's totally different from any other games you're used of playing
each round each cyclist has to be moved, and the order in which they are moved, depends on their position, so you don't go player-by-player like in other games.
if one cyclist is moved, the ones behind can choose to jump into the wheel and move alongside.
that's the basis of the game, but you have numerous power-ups, opportunity-cards (which can turn out bad), and you can cheat by hooking onto a car :D

what i love to play is well, don't know if you could call it a board game, and i have no idea what it's called in english, but "stapelwoord" (wordstack) i like playing as well
STAPELWOORD-FOTOSPELSITUATIE.jpg

pretty much the same as scrabble, but you can stack letters on top, which sometimes gives for awesome scores :D

another one in the criteria "not sure if it's a board-game", is abalone
abalone.jpg

the aim is to kick out 6 marbles of your opponent, you always need one more marble than him to be allowed to push, and you can never move more than 3 of your own marbles. easy...but oh so hard :D

and of course chess, that's a classic

Abalone and Risk are great, we even have 4 player Abalone :)

OH DAMN!

I forgot two of the games!

First, Lifeboats. You place your people in lifeboats and every round people decide a) which boat moves and b) which boat gets a hole. More holes than people = drowned. And there are majority decisions on who dies to empty a spot for a hole, great fun :D

pic166992_md.jpg

Second, Kill Dr. Lucky. Your goal is to kill Dr. Lucky who moves around in his mansion. Only rule: You must not be seen doing it. So you try to both get a spot to kill him and to prevent others from doing it. Cheap, simple, fun and very evil. There is a tame version called "safe Dr. Lucky" where you have to prevent him from suiciding while everyone watches :D.

Pistas, you have to guess an object, character or adjetive picked by another player. they give you as many clues as you want, the less clues you need to finally guess what the thing is, the more you move forward on the board

Carrera de mente, is about answering questions about sports, history, etc...

Tutti Frutti

Jumanji

and of course scrabble

A couple of my favourite boardgames:
Robo Rally: Chaos, mayhem, programming and fun.
roborallySet.jpg

Civilization: It's like the computer game, but takes up more space.
civ-big.jpg

Puerto Rico: My personal favourite, a tactics based game of colonialism. Nice thing about is that there's no dice, this game completely hinges on your strategic abilities and how well you can predict your opponents' actions and reactions.

Hero Quest: D&D lite with Citadel miniatures.

I played "We Play Shopping (for stupid and randomly priced groceries)" this weekend with my 5 year old cousin.

She beat me. Twice.

Robo Rally! :D

Settlers of Catan

Ticket to Ride

Yes, yes, and more YES! I love both Settlers and Ticket to Ride, I have 2 versions of TTR.

I also love Dominion and Talisman. My girlfriend, her older sister and her sister's husband (And me) tend to have board game nights at least once a month. They collect board games, so we always have something new to play.

+1 to Catan (plus the three expansions) (cities & knights here... at the start of a game long before any game destroying metropoli)
https://pic.armedcats.net/r/ra/ramseus/2010/08/31/catan.jpg

Carcassone - it's a really simple game, you randomly choose square tiles that mostly have pieces of roads and/or cities on one or more sides, you place your little guy down and get points (and your guy back) for completing roads and cities. There's a lot of strategy involved though, you can steal other people's stuff, screw them out of ever finishing a city, and steal their goods with the traders and builders expansion. It also takes up a completely unpredictable amount of space.
https://pic.armedcats.net/r/ra/ramseus/2010/08/31/carcassone.jpg

Puerto Rico, what Adu said. It's our newest game and it's great.

Onyx Edition Scrabble, you know, it's scrabble, but nicer - the board spins and has ridges and it's all shiny silver and black.
Scrabble%20onyx.jpg

And sometimes Clue because it's fun and also a couple trivial pursuits... which suck after you've gone through all the cards and know all the answers :( Next game to get: Axis & Allies Europe 1940... because risk could always use a thousand times as many rules and take even longer to play through

For those who think Robo Rally is too easy:

220px-Roboter.jpg

Ricochet Robots. For up to an infinite number of players.
There are a couple of robots on the field, and some target fields. Each round, a target field is selected and all players have to think of a way to move a particular robot onto that target field within a set of moving rules. The quickest thinker offers a number of moves, the others get an additional minute to challenge him with a lower number. The player offering the lowest number then proceeds to show his moves. If his claim is correct, he gets a point. The player with the most points wins.

My dad taught me how to play. I got addicted. Playing with him and family is most fun, but I got my friends into it, and now it's one of those things we have to do at least once a month, if not every two months.

ah_prod_risk2210_pic1_en.jpg

Another variation of Risk, and it's actually surprisingly fun. It has a whole new dimension to the game by adding event cards, which give you various attacking, defensive and diplomatic advantages during your turn. The game only lasts 6 turns, but it will still take at least 4 hours to finish one game.

Apart from these two, I obviously play Monopoly, too :p

A couple of my favorite drinking stories involve Risk. I often find myself just debating strategy with other players as time goes on, and eventually the game grinds to a halt when we all pass out or vomit.

othello is a lot of fun as well

I need to inquire on that Robo Rally game and Quelf..... :D

Speaking of Risk, we also have Star Wars Risk, it is quite nice but 4 players only....

i think 5 players is to much anyways. all the base are way to spread out, and there's always one player who doesn't survive the first 30 mins...
4 is the best, if you play with 3, it always ends up 2 versus 1
