BMW E39 2003 525i touring

shortly before Ringmeet 2013 i aquired a new car, a BMW to be particiluar.

i had a look at some 5 and 3 series Limosine/Tourings. Before setteling with this one.
It was by far the best body condition wise and maintainence records wise, with a big inspection done last year.

It's pretty low spec though: cloth seats,2 zone ac control, PDC front and rear and the DSCIII (which only came in the last year models (03) ), removable towing hitch and fog lights are the noteable optional extras.

engine wise it's the M54 unit which replaced M52 unit of the 528, with the double Vanos putting out as much power as the 528 (193 bhp) and being lower on emissions reaching the Euro4 standard + moderate fuel consumption between 9/10 Liter per 100km (yay more money for my pockets). Other noteable infos about this car: both gearbox and lsd are not leaking (rare for e39's) normaly they leak a bit which is like factory default (Win !) exhaust is stainless steel and control arms both front and rear are made of aluminium. It has a 2 split trunk lid (glas part seperates).

things needed to be done:

- give the car a good polish and cutting + waxing
- replace the stock low spec 16'inch alloys for some stock BMW/BBS RC090 (fun fact those were only aviable for the Limosine)
- some other Edd Chinareing on the inside (tlc)
- replacing the 0W40 oil and filter with normal oil next year for the regular oil change
- getting rid of some weight in the trunk lid, since the gas dampers can't hold them properly up when it's cold as i discovered @ ringmeet (common problem)

the impressions after driving it it for 2000km the last 2 weeks. I'm loving it ! It is a whole other drive feeling. The Golf pulled harder and faster from the bottom to mid rev range, making it feel fast hard and rough like a racecar (atleast i imagine a racecar to be this like). This though pulls from bottom to end,not so hard and harsh as the Golf tbh, it glides more in sort of bentley way (like a Sir). It's like a jetfighter cutting though the Autobahn like Cr?me br?l?e. And it's not tiring at all driving it for longer stints, thanks to the supporting seats and the electric lordosen which will support your back.

finally some pics and proof. some more and better will follow after buffing the shizzle out of it.

Very nice. I actually like cloth seats more, leather is too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. I would get rid of the wood interior decor fillet, but that's personal taste.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Bobele23 again.

I've seen it in the metal, I like it quite a lot, even though the E39 5er is far from my favourite BMW. The split tailgate is a nice addition, although it's a nbit hard to pull the rolleau cover closed through the open window. And I see you have the similarly awesome placement of your rear speakers :)

If the leather is too hot, it's got the wrong colour. My bright yellow leather is never hot :)

It's very nice indeed, and I'm sold on BMW straight 6s after riding in it and several other BMWs over the Ringmeet weekend. I will own a BMW, one day.

I'll trade you for the Disco :p

E39 tourings are awesome. Congrats :D

1) 0W40 is normal oil. Mobil recommends it for your car. Liqui-Moly recommends various types of 5W-30 and 5W-40 though.

2) What? No. Common problem indeed, but the problem is that your gas struts are worn out. Not that the bootlid suddenly gained weight.
If anything, E39 Touring bootlids are famous for turning into superleggera by themselves after a decade or so. :p

1) No 0W40 is some Longlife Shite WD40 oil which viscosity is below olive oil and i don't want WD40 oil in my car , 5W40 sounds mor like a reasonable number. I'm going with Castrol Oil though.

2)What? yes i know it comes from the worn gas dampers, but mine are not fully worn out. It's only when it's cold they start to fail. Hell i might even not fix it, since i don't need to open the boot so much and i have my shooting hatch that still works perfectly fine :p

lets see if they are still there till Friday, unfortunately I won't be able to go down there sooner. cross the fingers. they do look finger licking good and only 1 tyre needs replacement.
though i have a backup plan if this one busts .... :D

:woot::love::drool: best thing is it would be still sort of stock :)
Very nice, 17" is just about the perfect size for looking good but still being comfortable.

What about ringing the seller and confirm you'd want the wheels even though you can pick them up on Friday earliest? At least you'll have the foot in the door, and if someone else rings in the meantime who bids less the seller would know that you pay more just 4 days in the future.

If the bootlid won't stay up just because it's a bit cold, it's time to replace the struts.

And face it, 0W-40 is normal. :p

Yeah i might try to ring him from work, depends on how buisy it is. Still i have a back up plan

Very nice, I had a 1996 E39 528i manual saloon, it went to 272000km without any big issues. The 'kombi' is a great workhorse. I hope you enjoy it.

(I went from E39 to E46 330ci, a car without as much fun, somehow).

And sorry, but the Diesel is just the better engine for driving on the Autobahn.

Huh? I really rather like my petrol 5er on the autobahn - the only issue with Petrol is at best I get 10.5L/100km - with a 3L diesel I could get about of half that. Note my current average is 14.8L/100km

I manage 9,5L/100 km :dunno:, though i can mostly only do 140kph/160kph due to the area where i live and the daytime speedlimit on the A1 up north. It's not that bad when i compare it to the Golf who'd do at best 11L/100km (driving like a Nana) and when you step on it, it'll do over 20L/km @220kph as i discovered from Eindhoven on the way back from the Amsterdam Minimeet (fuel warning light roulette :p ). Even when i hoon the BMW around the countryroads here with some twistys and hills, it'll still do just under 11L/100Km. That's one of the reasons i love this car, compared to it's size and equippment the Beemer is quite cheap to run and I don't only mean Petrol. It is also cheaper in tax and Insurance than the Golf, despite being this big and 50 more Hp. :)

Fixed that for ya, Gramps.

It's hard for me to imagine the E39 with anything other than the 3-liter diesel. Except the twin-turbo Alpina version with ~40 more horses of course.
