British sports car firm Ultima has set a new world record: its GTR accelerated from 0 to 100mph and then braked back to a standstill in just 9.8 seconds, the first production car to break the 10-second mark in such a test. It accelerated 0-60mph in 2.7 secs, did 0-100 in 5.8secs, and then braked 100-0 in a further 3.8 secs - the first two times also record-setting. The road-legal, factory-built car was driven by Ultima Sports Ltd director Richard Marlow, who said: "Our new world record one again proves that the Ultima GTR is truly the fastest supercar currently available in the world today, and by a substantial margin."

The record-breaking GTR is powered by a 685 bhp Chevrolet V8 built by American Speed. Marlow added: "We are also currently installing a 640 bhp engine into one of our other demonstrators, to be named the Ultima GTR640 in commemoration of all our existing world records achieved with 640bhp."

I actually have a clip of this. I'll look for it tomorrow. Not that impressive to watch, but still cool. At that time I didn't know it was such an important vid.

I wouldn't go that far, but it's far from pretty. The rear end is OK, but the front is just plain ugly. Plus, I don't think they would lose that much in terms of aerodynamics if they'd widen the cockpit a bit.

the ultima is a kit car, and previously the factory built turnkey cars featured fairly stock chevy v8s or v6s from another manufacturer. recently they started building up the factory cars to high hp using superchargers and turbos.

by the way i like the car. not stunning (i dont like the headlights) but if you see one in person (which i have) it looks like it just ran off a racetrack, and pretty or not, thats just cool :p

thats an ugly car... it doesn't count when an ugly car breaks the record :p hehe
impressive performance i must say.. but how much does it weigh?.. nearly nothing i would say
