A new British sports car maker is to launch its back-to-basics Cosworth-engined track car at the Autosport International Show in Birmingham this week.

Brooke Cars, based in Devon, aims to revive the spirit of racers of the 50s and 60s with its retro-look Double R, though the car is built around a modern tubular steel spaceframe chassis with composite "tub".

The Double R weighs just under 550kg - giving it a better power-to-weight ratio than a Lamborghini Murcielago - and is fitted with a choice of 2.0-litre and 2.3-litre Cosworth-Ford Duratec engines, mid-mounted with a transaxle gearbox. Power outputs range from 190-300bhp. Road-legal two-seaters will also be offered, in right- or left-hand drive form, and prices are to start from ?23,995.

The company is running final tests before production begins in the spring.
