Top 10 movie car chases
Survey: 'Bullitt' zooms to top list of greatest car chases on film; 'Fast and Furious' takes tenth.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Steve McQueen's car chase scene in the 1968 movie "Bullitt" still ranks as the most popular car chase scene in Hollywood history, according to a survey.

The detective movie, which featured McQueen driving a Ford Mustang in a high-speed chase through the streets of San Francisco, captured 40 percent of the votes in the survey. The email survey was conducted by Hagerty Insurance, a company that insures collectible cars, and had nearly 2,000 respondents.

"Bullitt" beat out its nearest rival, the 2000 remake of the movie"Gone in 60 Seconds," by almost a five to one margin.

The action comedies "Smokey and the Bandit" and "The Blues Brothers" took the third and fourth spots.

Rounding out the list, the original 1974 version of "Gone in 60 Seconds" finished fifth, followed by "The French Connection", "Ronin", "Vanishing Point", the recent remake of "The Italian Job" and "The Fast and Furious" which claimed the tenth spot.

Those films that just missed the cut included the "The Bourne Supremacy," the Ducati motorcycle scene in "The Matrix Reloaded" and "Days of Thunder" featuring Tom Cruise.

I wonder why the "Taxi" didnt make it to the list. Though the 2nd and 3rd part had some exaggerattions, there were quite a few nice chase scenes. Cobra with S. Stalone had also good scenes.

The Bullitt chase was freaking awesome.

Bullitt was lame and overrated. Good to see Ronin in there, the BMW/Pugeot scene was probably the best filmed car chase i've seen.

Sorry, but I have to quote Jeremy Clarkson here: It?s the only chase scene I can remember where we don?t have music! Just the engine noise. And the scenes are pretty cool too, bearing in mind that it?s an "old" movie.
But I agree that Ronin is very good!

They had a great 30min programme on BBC radio 4 about Bullitt. It was really interesting. It was Steve Mcqueen's first movie financed by his new film company. And there was never going to be a car chase.

The director was an English chap who had pretty much only filmed documentary?s (hence why it looks how it is) and all he and Steve talked about was cars so they wrote in a chase sequence.

The chase it's self is only 8mins long, but everyone remembers it and probably cant' tell you about anything else about the film (I know I can't).
The Mustang's engine sound is also dubbed over with a GT40.

The reason Bullitt's chase is so important was that it was the first ever proper car chase to appear. So all the films that come after owe a little bit to Bullitt.

Just had a quick look and the director doing a special programme on McQueen this sat

Oh and Fast and Furious is the only car movie that had no car action, pile of crap. The italian job (original) has a good sequence, quite liked the bourne identity london chase. The transporter had some good bit's too if I remember.

I would have to agree with the Bullitt chase as well. No sound effects, no film speed up, just basic engine noise and realistic tire squeal.
The original gone in 60 seconds was a 40 minute chase and was just plain wacky but fun.
Fast and Furious (the chase) was crap.
Ronin was up there with Bullit.
Vanishing Point bored me to sleep. I don't know what the big deal about that film was.
Blues Bros was too far fetched and Hollywood.
I actually enjoyed the chase from The Rock. Nick Cage in the Ferrari vs. Sean Connery in the HumVee.

Erm... what about the original Italian Job? That Mini chase should at least be in the top 5.

Well, the survey was for Hollywood movies and only Americans voted so Taxi 1, 2, and 3 were not included. Haven't seen Bullitt yet, but the best car chases are from Ronin, and Taxi 1 and 2. Part 3 sucks.

The Transporter should be up there as well. The best car chases are always from French movies.

do you know the chase of 60's second chrono ... not the last one ... but the Old movie (1974 if i remember) It longs 40min !! just for the pursuit ! an entire half of a film only for a pursuit of a Mustang by the police ... as realistic as bullit but longer

actually the title is "gone in 60 seconds" produced by ?H.B. "TOBY"' HALICKI in 1974 ;)

No Taxi? No Mad Max? Remake of the Italian Job instead of the original?

Pfft.
