Hey guys, I'm getting a PS2 (I'm so on the ball right?). My friend says the new slim version is glitchy, is this true?

Where's a good place to buy one? EBGames is good, but they don't ship to Canada.

Thanks for the help dudes.

I'm not real sure on the models, but it's about time dude (don't feel bad, I don't have one yet either). Actually, you would think the prices should be dropping with the new consoles on the horizon.

EDIT: Woo-hoo: me and Kip are likeminded!

I heard about lots of problems with the firs shipment. I don't know if it's resolved by now. It's a Sony product, you never know.
Jokes aside, you're probably on the safe side buying a standard PS2. All the minor glitches should be remedied since they're producing them for such a long time.

Why don't you get one at your local shopping mall. Prices should be the same in every mayor electronics store. At least here they are.

Don't get the slim one if you plan on buying GT4, a lot of those will go on the fritz
Slim = less cooling ;)

Thanks for the advice, because GT4 is the reason I'm buying one.

The problem is they only have the slim ones in stock now.

why not wait abit and get a ps3?... but if you have any questions about ps2 slim, I think jason can answer them, he bought one when it came out and AFAIK, there hasn't been any problems with it

If you decide to get an older standard sized PS2, you are going to have to spend a very, very long time trying to find one. As far as I know a new one is nearly impossible to find these days.

I have a friend with a slim PS2 who hasn't experienced any problems. He doesn't play GT4, but he has played hundreds upon hundreds of hours of RPGs (he is currently playing through every single Final Fantasy game in order from 1 to 10-2) with no problems.

I only heard of the heat problem with GT4 (probably has to do with the game taking the max of the system)
And i heard it a lot, so i wouldn't take any changes ;)

I'll see if i can find a link to an older model for you a bit later

I don't understand your comment about EB Games. Surely you know that they're all over Canada. They could probably find out for you if any EB stores have the older model in stock, maybe even an in-province store. Even if it's not a brand new older style PS2 (which will be very hard to find), I'm sure many traded in their older models towards buying a slim one.

I have a slim PS2.

I play MGS2, MGS3, GT4, all the GTAs, God of War, you get the picture.

The console feels hot, that's because the CPU has a heatsink rather than a fan. Just keep it on a cool surface, you'll be good to go.

You also can't beat the built-in ethernet and IR.

Reminds me of a peripheral I once saw that basically looked like a hotplate, except it made the surface cold. It was designed to put consoles on. Looked gimmicky, but it may have worked well with the PSOne, which I heard had huge overheating problems.

I was referring to their online store, which doesn't ship consoles to Canada. I haven't seen a physical EB Games store - I didn't even know they existed.

I was forced into purchasing a new one after my classic old one gave up (just b4 GT4 :x ). The new one can't stand vertically without a stand..if the disk spins too hard it just falls. It isnt identifyable as a PS2 and I had the cool blue PS2 stand for the old one and it looked 8)

If you care...save some money and buy a used PS2

btw you shouldnt have put >that< option in the poll cos...well...u know wht every1's gonna put

Now that it's on your mind a bit, you may start to notice them in your travels. There's one in Barrie that I visit whenever I'm there and I've been to a few others in and around Toronto, too.

You should go here and click on the "Store Locator" link at the top of the page. Click on the Canadian flag in the box that pops up and you're good to go. You may just find a store close to where you live!

I just did a search limited to within 100 miles of Ottawa and it found 19 stores. It even uses Mapquest to give you driving directions on how to get to them and phone numbers if you just want to call them. :)
