I am looking for an old VW Beetle, a friend of mine had one a while ago and I really loved it. Now since I watched FG today Vicky reminded me to look for it again. I saw a few Beetles, but I have no experience with this car.
So I don't know what to look for, what problems it has and so on.

I can't really pay more than 600-700 euros (775-900 USD) for it, and I know there are some that are in that pricerange.

I found some on dutch sites:
1200cc 1982 Beetle, little bit of rust, gearbox is in perfect condition, no APK..it's the annual test the car has to have to be on the road.

1978 1300cc a little expensive with ?900.

1983 Beetle ?850 in 'reasonable' condition.

1973 Beetle 1303 ?950.

EDIT: Don't mind this first post, I'm aiming at a 2000euro Beetle.

wow, you guys really get moved easily by top gear and fifth gear, i remember when top gear showed the old porsches ep, everybody started to look for one and now this :p just save up your money and buy a really good car at the end.

No it's not because of Fifth Gear, I'm concidering it for about a year now.

And yeah I wanna have a nice car later, but I got my license for 2 years now and I just wanna have some fun, screw money, I have plenty of money from working and I don't really spend that much on clothes or other stuff.

There are some good ones, that friend of mine got one for 400 euros and it only had to be tested for roadlegal stuff and with 500 euros it was done..

the only thing I remeber about VW bugs is the sills drop to pieces at the first sign of water. The door bottoms are pretty crap too, the engines are pretty good as far as I know. Just rember the performace sucks arse. Oh and the boot is in the front ;)

Haha, yeah I know about the boot. I LOVE that engine, the sounds..

And yeah performance is not like a Viper or Vette, but I can live with it, the sound is better than a Viper anyways.

Another good thing is that most Bugs are too old to pay roadtax or almost no tax 8)

Awesome!
A retro cruiser! YOU HAVE TO POST PICS, when you really bought one... I wish you luck for a good one...

Buba

Yeah I will, this really is one of my old time favourite cars. I like it even more than a Mini Cooper (which I like alot). This had 2 things, it looks good, and it sounds awesome!

Btw, I already know a few things which to look for such as rust on a few places like bottom of the door, doorseems, mounting sparewheel etc.

Also, it's on leaded fuel, which is one of the most expensives now..

I think a good Bug will gonna cost me over 1500 euros, these 750 euros are not in perfect condition. But the good thing is that this car is very basic, so I could do lots of things myself.

I prefer one before 1972 btw, I don't want a bug with those 'elephantfeet' rearlights..

Good luck with the bug mate, if you can't weld I seriously recommend you learn. But I'm glad to hear there's a few more people considering classic's as real cars. My mates mum had a bug as her daily driver and loved it to death (literaly)

I would go for the mini myself (I'm am british though) faster and better handling.

But your right about the aircooled engine, sounds great.

Give me a shout if you need some info, my friends brother used to own tons of bugs and knows them like the back of his hand.

That's a kind offer :D

And no I can't weld, but I don't have a garage either where I can weld, and no equipment.. :(
So you're saying I should do a weldingcourse (If I get my bug) but how should I weld without equipment?

I once drove a mini though, but the problem is, I'm 1m88 (6feet and a bit) so it's kinda NOT comfortable..

i totally agree

i think it's stupid to buy a decent car when you're not driving for 5 years yet. you will crash it anyway, either because you're unexperienced, or because you're doing stupid things with it

i also want a car that it's cheaper to buy a new car than to renew the tires

and i have a friend who has a bug for sale...
...in boxes
a birthday present from his father, a complete bug in individual parts

and the leaded fuel thing. there are replacement products you can buy, just get ordinary petrol, and add a little in the tank, it works as well

Haha, that's kinda cool too, if you have the space to build it. I don't :( Otherwise I would buy a project, school is busy but lately I'm doing school only and I get sick of it that I can't do other things, so ?'m gonna make some real time for this car.

My friend has been refurnishing a 1969 Beetle for the last year or so, and he is still at it. I have been helping him out on a few occations, and the thing I have learned about a Beetle is, that it isn't actually a car by modern standards. It isn't very safe because of the suspension and the over-all design. It isn't very powerful and it consumes quite a lot of fuel. It isn't very comfortable because of no real audio system and it has just a heater, nothing that could be called air-conditioning or anything like that.

But, if you like to do stuff with your hands and maybe do some very large scale maintenance on a car, a Beetle is the perfect project. It is a very straight forward design. Everything is pretty much the same as in a modern car, although it comes across as being much more simple and easier to get to. And of course, the sound...

Well the first things you mentioned are no problem for me at all, I am traveling by train to get to school daily and I won't be using this to go to school. It's only for fun, I wanna drive it in weekends (since tax is almost nothing on those bugs) and do some work on it.

I'm gonna make a testdrive soon, because I have never driven it myself.

And the simplicity of the car is really great for learning how a car is made.

I just finished my carmechanicstudy and I know more about cars now, also from what's inside. So I really like to work on it.

Looks like its hard to get a nice example for under 1k.

But loadsa choice around.

Lol, here it is:

Name you want to be shown

There are a few under 1000 euros yes, but I wonder how good they really are. Some people don't know anything about cars and offer it for 800 euros but that car could be really good.
