Camcorders

For camcorders you don't need to worry about compatibility at all between the various platforms unless its one of those new spiffy HD camera (Just got mine last month, and it is stunning). As for within your price range the Panasonic 3CCD's (Basically the one you picked) is definately the best for picture quality. As I have yet to actually see one of these in person and be able to mess around with it, this is all based on theory. Based on the typical 3CCD camera, the low-light performance might not be the greatest, but for everything else the images will look far superior to any one-chip camera. Also, I have no idea on the built-in microphone in one of those things, but I assume its not that great as most built-in mics typically are.

Considered Canon? That would be my first pick. Otherwise, Sony and Panasonic are good choices.

Yeah...i was checking out Canon as well. I'm also looking for something that looks nice, and I kinda prefer the looks of the panasonic more. Although my bro went to scope it out in person, he said it was okay.

sns2015, did you get that new sony HD?

I'm thinking about getting this Panasonic for my wife:

30x optical zoom for $399 is incredible. Plus it has a mic jack and S-Video. After reading a lot of reviews, this seems to be one of the best you can get for under $500.

She just might get it for Christmas yet!

Yes it is small and that's what she's looking for: something that isn't bulky:

It weighs less than a pound, so I think it will be a good choice for her.
