Is there a way to convert the sound of AVI movies into an mp3 file?

If you're using a Mac, you can use ffmpeg (which can convert almost anything):

If you have Quicktime Pro, you can just open up your Top Gear AVI file with Quicktime, and export the sound to MP3.

Virtual Dub (google it) can rip the sound from video files, and you can also use it to encode the files into MP3.
