My ftp port is blocked and therefore I visit Hokie's ftp using a browser and then copy/paste the link to FlashGet for download. That has worked from the beginning until last week.

First, Internet Explorer decided not to let me enter any ftp folders on the internet. Whenever I type in the ftp address with my username and password, it gives me this message:

Windows cannot access this folder. Make sure you typed the file name correctly and that you have permission to access the folder.

Details:
The FTP session was terminated

What the hell? I do type in the file name correctly and I do have permission to access the folder :x

Okay, fine. It didn't matter anyway since I use Firefox as my browser and used it for downloading from Hokie. But lo behold, now Firefox doesn't let me enter any ftp site either. Things are getting really fishy now.

Whenever I type in the ftp address with the username and pass, it says 'Access Denied'. I tried accessing through 2 or 3 other browsers and that didnt work either.

But I tried entering from my ISP's office computer and I could enter the ftp there alright. So, it has to be a problem with my computer, OS, or something that I don't know.

Someone PLEASE HELP

And btw, can SOMEONE tell me how to uninstall the pathetic Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP. The entire internet doesn't seem to know how. For once, a google search has failed me. :x

If you install SP1 or SP2, I think you'll get IE6.

Have you installed any firewall or antivirus program?

Mishal,

go to c:\windows\inf and right click on IE.inf. Click Install and make sure you have the XP CD-ROM in the cd drive. Basically it reinstalls IE and fixes most problems. Try that first. I always do.

Here are couple thing, which could help.

- Try to use seperate FTP program, like CuteFTP or WS FTP.
- From FTP program's option menu, change to PASV (passive) mode and try again
- If you are using firewall programs, try to turn them off
- Try to disable XP's own firewall from Control Panel - Windows Firewall
- Check again, thatt username, password and port number are right

If none of these above work, then I have then no idea what could be wrong. Good luck with that.
