Cars with high redlines

On my MX-5 1.8 the redline starts at 7000, but the rev limiter kicks in as soon as approx. 7300 (I know because I had the misfortune of unintentionally experiencing it in 1st and 2nd gear so far). IIRC the S2000's VTEC engine revs up to 9000 or 9500/min or something like that, and the question occured to me: what's the highest-revving production car?

I can't help thinking the Carrera GT's N/A V10 revs above 10k, but then again maybe I'm just blinded by love :)

Let's exclude concept cars, one-offs, racing cars, and tuner cars (including factory tuners like AMG or Mugen or ...)

I think the S2000 is your answer with it's 9k rpm redline (that's with the 2.0 litre engine, not the 2.2 the US gets now)

I don't think the Carrera GT redlines at 10K... but it does make peak power at a lofty 8000rpm.

EDIT:

The little engine that could actually redlines at 8400rpm. Not 10000.

But... isn't that bad, that the peak power point is so close to the redline?

you adjust your gearbox so it isn't bad

you should make sure that your peak power is about in the middle of each gear-rev-range. if it's off, change your ratio, or when the drop in revs is to high, add another gear

that's why the M5 has 7 gears, or with each gearchange the revs would fall back with 4K or sth, which is way to much

Not necessarily - provided the motor makes good torque from low revs you'll have a really wide powerband. Having peak power up high is only a problem if the design and tuning of the motor has sacrified low end torque for high rev power - the S2000 is an excellent example of this, down low it has very little response.

Correct me If I?m wrong, but shouldn?t that be the torque about in the middle of each gear range?
The redline is a little over the peak power so your have some room to change after your reached it, and the cut-off is a little after that for the same reason. So it?s goes a little like this: You?re flooring your Carrera GT, reached 8000 rpm (peak power), change gear, the revs fall to 6000 (I?m guessing here...), 2000 revs short of the peak power but already past the peak torque, so it wong bog down...
If I?m wrong , please someone correct me... :)

Well, if you have peak torque down low that usually means it has the broad curve, so it will have the same amount from say 1800-5500 RPM. :)

What about the RX-8?

2005 Tideland Prius Premium Package
VVT-i emblem, Sport Pedals, Cargo Mat, All-Weather Mat, EV mod.

I know this is OT, but please tell me this is just a joke, and the freaking VVT-i sticker is not really part of an options package...

Although I have seen an MX-5 turbo kit offered in a web shop that included all the necessary parts, plus a small metal 'T' emblem in the same typeface as the stock 1.6/1.8 designation, so you can glue it up :)

... VVT-i emblem (not sticker, get your terms right) is off ebay for god's sake. Neither is the rest of the things listed in a "package".

Jeez, I come here to get mocked. How nice.

hahahaha I'm glad I'm not the only one who asked that. haha

And yes, you shouldn't have your peak power midway through the range because you'd then have to shift midway through the range.

At peak power, the car is accelerating its fastest in that gear.

Good pick up - it ties with the S2000 at 9000rpm (but it's a rotary, which makes it a bit less of an engineering achievement)

Relax dude, I don't think he was mocking you, just that your sig reads kinda like the emblem is part of the options package which would be a bit unusual.

Yeah, I was thinking along the lines of 9000ish. But how is it less of an engineering achievement if I may inquire?

and about the last bit, sorry. I just thought it was clear that the 2nd line were just accessories and add-ons.

It's a rotary, so you don't have the challenges of a piston and conrod accelerating and decelerating each revolution - making a rotary spin faster is easier. It's still very impressive though.

My Cobra redlines at 8500 RPM. Not bad for 1965 technology.

A pushrod V8 I assume? If so that's mighty impressive. So that's your cobra in your avatar?

Exactly.

Yep. Pushrods, dual carbs, overheating problems, no mufflers and way too much power. Everything a guy wanted in 1965.

that's your cobra in your avatar
Yes, it is. There's a thread somewhere that talks about it with a lot more pictures. I was going to send you the link but I can't find it. Maybe I need to do it again.
