this got me thinking, what is the largest single cylinder engine ever made?

This would have to be a candidate: 330 L

... although the cylinder has a puny bore of just 28 inches ... the biggest cylinders in an engine ever have a bore of 38 inches .. found in Wartsila-Sulzer RTA96-C marine engines .. here is the crankshaft of one:

how does that work?? the submarine goes underwater, and bubbles of smoke are comming up? not very stealthy if you ask me...

The engine is from a torpedo boat, not a submarine.

The engine is from a torpedo boat, not a submarine.

...additionally, all non-nuclear submarines have diesel engines for surface travel and battery-powered electric motors for underwater use. Thus, the dive time is limited by battery life and air supply: At some point you got to surface and turn on the diesels to recharge.

Watch Das Boot for more awesomeness.

Not insanely large (9.3 litre V8) but since it develops 2200hp and is the fastest street legal car.........in the world (allegedly) I felt it deserved here.

Here`s another one...

Rover meteor tank engine (Rolls Royce merlin without the superchargers, manufactured by Rover) in a Rover SD1

The thing I like about this is that it has a 27 litre badge on the back, the normal Rover SD1 came with the 2.7 litre inline 6 too, could be confusing.

Just wait for the Weyyrrun, 124 liters in an X-128, with 2 turbos per cilinder.
